The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) Advisory Board, conducted its kickoff ceremony on June 1 in the company of more than 150 attendees.
Elected officials, board members and special guests unveiled a mural that will be on display in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center until June 30.
The mural project was created by the 2021-2022 Gender & Sexuality Living Learning Community. It is part of the GSS 350 Course, a civic engagement course focused on impactful ways to create social change in the LGBTQ community. Twenty students, faculty, and staff worked collaboratively with other community agencies to establish this project, a LGBTQIA+ ICON mobile mural.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade Commission chair Jose “Pepe” Diaz, Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins, Miami-Dade Police interim director George A. Perez, Miami Beach Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, North Miami Councilmember Scott Galvin, Mexican Consul General Johnathan Chait, United Kingdom Consul General Nicolette Brent MBE, and Canadian Consul General Susan Harper participated in the day’s celebration.
Through the years, the Miami-Dade County Commission has established policies and taken positions designed to promote inclusiveness and diversity in Miami-Dade. Such policies include the creation of the Miami-Dade LGBTQ Advisory Board, sponsored by Commissioner Higgins. Last year, the LGBTQ Advisory Board played a key role in advancing legislation urging the county commission to recognize the significance of the LGBTQ community and its leaders in the month of October to celebrate LGBTQ History Month.
The LGBTQ Advisory Board promotes Miami-Dade County as a place where LGBTQ-friendly businesses, residents and visitors can live, work and be part of a diverse and inclusive community.
Miami-Dade County attracts more than one million LGBTQ visitors each year as well as individuals, businesses and professionals seeking to relocate to this community Nearly one in four Americans (23.6 percent) consider themselves Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender or Queer.
