National Water Dance takes center stage on Earth Day
The free event will feature entertainment, a beach cleanup and a Sunset Happy Hour on Apr. 20.

Live Arts Miami and NWD Projects will present National Water Dance at Crandon Beach Park in Key Biscayne on Apr. 20 for Earth Day. The family-friendly event is free and combines performing arts with nature to raise awareness about the climate crisis.

Hosted in Crandon Beach Park’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center, National Water Dance is a biannual event, founded by Dale Andree. This simultaneous, livestreamed performance is held throughout the United States and unites dancers, musicians and visual artists around the unique bodies of water that impact their communities.

Celebrating the sixth edition with the theme “Moving Forward Together,” this year’s event will feature many of Miami’s established dance companies and performing artists, including NWD Projects, Dance Now! Miami, Olujimi Dance Collective, Karen Peterson & Dancers, Jubilation Dance Ensemble, Thryn Saxon, with special performances by Inez Barlatier, Ray Robinson, New World Symphony Violin Fellow Ye Jin Min and the Miami Sound Choir.

The day’s events begin at 3 p.m. with Dream In Green’s Eco-Summit and pre-show activities. Promptly at 4 p.m., National Water Dance commences, and the national livestream begins. Following that, at 5 p.m., the audience is invited to participate in Debris Free Oceans Beach Clean Up, culminating in a Sunset Happy Hour at 6 p.m.

“We are thrilled to collaborate on National Water Dance as part of our EcoCultura series of performances for the planet.” said Kathryn Garcia, executive director of Live Arts Miami. “We celebrate the role of artists as changemakers and Dale exemplifies this with her efforts to mobilize audiences through deeper experiences in nature that inspire action.”

Live Arts Miami’s EcoCultura initiative is an ongoing series of action-driven programs and performances for the planet: artists tackling climate change through dynamic dance, theater, and music events, and educational activities designed to build awareness, spark dialogue and fan the flames of positive change.

National Water Dance encourages ongoing engagement between dance and the environment. Beginning in 2011 as a statewide project in Florida, it now boasts 70 locations across the United States. With each event National Water Dance recommits itself to the effort of increasing purposeful awareness to drive action on environmental issues, specifically climate change.

“We want to open doors of curiosity,” Andree said. “Seeing dance emerge in unexpected natural settings encourages people to see the familiar from a different perspective, offering the opportunity to connect viscerally and care more deeply. When you care about something you want to protect it and that is the goal of National Water Dance.”
