New ferry service links Miami to Bahamian Island of Bimini

The Baleària Bahamas Express, owned by Spanish ferry operator Baleària and the Capo Group, launched a new ferry service on Feb. 8 from PortMiami linking Miami and Bimini in the Bahamas with roundtrip service three days a week.

The high-speed vessel, Maverick, offers roundtrip crossings between Miami and Bimini on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The once-daily ferry service departs PortMiami at 9 a.m. and Bimini at 5 p.m. It is anticipated that service will be increased for the summer season.

“We are pleased to welcome the Maverick to PortMiami,” said Miami- Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “The ferry is a great new addition to the port’s fleet of passenger vessels.”

The Maverick accommodates up to 357 passengers and sails at a pleasant speed of 32 knots. Travel time to Bimini is just under two and a half hours.

“The new ferry service is ideal for a oneday excursion or an overnight adventure,” said Miami Dade County Commission chair Rebeca Sosa. “We are proud to have the Baleària Bahamas Express join PortMiami’s already exciting roster of passenger services.”

PortMiami director Bill Johnson said this is the first ferry service between Miami and Bimini at PortMiami.

Adolfo Utor, president of the Baleària Group, said the new service demonstrates the company’s commitment to South Florida and the Bahamian markets.
