Before fleeing her homeland of Afghanistan when the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Lalah Rahiq was a judge specializing in cases involving violence against women. Had she remained in Afghanistan, she would have been in grave danger.

Fortunately, Rahiq, her parents and siblings were offered resettlement in the United States. She now resides in Miami, where she receives care and support services from Refugee Assistance Alliance, a Miami-based non-profit organization founded in 2017 that assists forcibly displaced families with English language education, employment and community navigation to help them assimilate into the community.

On Saturday, October 5th, a fundraising event to benefit Refugee Assistance Alliance will be held at Greenspace Miami located at 7200 Biscayne Boulevard. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and feature presentations by former Afghan Judge Lalah Rahiq and former U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Rosemary Barkett. There will also be a silent auction.

Founded by Kristen Bloom, a trained English as a Second Language teacher and former Peace Corps volunteer, Refugee Assistance Alliance trains volunteers to teach English and provide practical help such as accompanying refugees to doctor appointments and assisting in opening bank accounts and getting driver’s licenses, among many other tasks.

The raising of the federal U.S. refugee cap, the Afghanistan evacuation, the Ukraine war and supportive U.S. response have all led to an increase in refugees arriving in South Florida. With refugee crises unfolding in Myanmar, South Sudan, Venezuela, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria and other countries, the need for support services is increasing.
