Orchestra Miami’s Discover Miami through Music series continues at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, 8 p.m., on Saturday, May 1, with a program of chamber music by composers who all just so happen to be women.
Celebrate the achievements of these incredible composers in the beautiful environs of the historic Coral Gables Woman’s Club. Discover Miami through Music allows audiences to learn more about the area’s collective history and each other, through concerts performed in local landmarks and places of historic interest.
The program features music by four women composers: The Romance for Violin & Piano Op. 23 by American composer and pianist Amy Marcy Beach; Piano Quintet N. 2 in E Major, Op. 31 by French composer and pianist Louise Farrenc; Quintet by Coral Gables native and first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, and Slow Burn (arranged for string quintet) by contemporary composer, violist and educator Jessica Meyer.
The performers include Orchestra Miami’s Concert Master Mei Mei Luo, who holds the Leo N Rinaldi Concert Master Chair, violinists Karen Lord-Powell and Dina Kostic, violist Chauncey Patterson, cellist Aaron Merritt, bassists Janet Clippard and Brian Powell, and Orchestra Miami’s artistic director Elaine Rinaldi on the piano.
Ruth Martinez, president of the CG Women’s Club, will give a brief talk about the history of the club and its many accomplishments before the program.
In existence since 1923, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club is comprised of dynamic women from Miami-Dade and Broward counties, whose common bond is a commitment to making South Florida a better place to live through helping other organizations.
Founded in 2006, Orchestra Miami is celebrating 14 seasons of excellence and innovative programs which are designed to build community and educate through music.
You can attend the concert in-person at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, located at 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. In-person tickets are $30 and include a glass of prosecco at intermission.
