Pelican Harbor Seabird Station recently broke ground on its future wildlife hospital and education center near the Little River, with approximately 140 participants — supporters, local leaders, and donors — joining for this historic moment.
The ceremony begins a journey toward creating a state-of-the-art facility that will elevate its ability to care for wildlife and educate the community. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2026 and they look forward to welcoming patients and community to this incredible new space.
Executive director Chloe Chelz welcomed the crowd and described the journey from purchasing the land nearly five years ago to the celebration, focusing on how acts of kindness, connecting to nature, and being in community define this non-profit organization.
Secretary William J. Osceola of the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida gave a land acknowledgment to honor the site’s past.
The event also featured remarks by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who described the county’s long partnership with PHSS and the role of this new center in serving both wildlife and the community, in addition to the forthcoming $1.98 million allocation from the county’s General Obligation Bond, which she personally fought to secure.
“This marks the most significant chapter in PHSS’s almost 45-year history, and without the support of our generous donors and government leaders, this day could not have happened,” said board chair Robert Glidewell.
Since 1980, PHSS has rehabilitated more than 44,000 wildlife patients. The new 8,000-square-foot facility will replace the current hospital, featuring advanced treatment rooms, expanded habitats, and exhibits that celebrate conservation and Florida’s natural wonders.
Adding to the excitement, archaeological excavations at the site uncovered Tequesta artifacts dating back to 750-1200 CE, which will be displayed in the new center. This project is a game-changer for PHSS, bringing it closer to fulfilling a mission of protecting wildlife and inspiring the community to join us in preserving Miami’s natural heritage.
