Preparing for Final Exams and Beyond: Academic Support for Miami-Dade Students

As the end of the school year fast approaches, so do final exams. In the last months, students will need to buckle down and study hard to demonstrate their understanding of the lessons taught throughout the academic year. The pressure can be substantial, and the stakes are high. Though finals can be particularly unnerving, test-taking throughout the year can create anxiety. Students of all ages may need extra assistance to perform at their best. Fortunately, there are numerous options available for Miami-Dade students.

Parents can start by contacting their child’s teachers or counselors to determine what support is available at their school. If those options are limited or the schedules don’t work, other free community options exist. The Children’s Trust is proud to partner with the Miami-Dade County Public Library System to offer the Homework Help & Tutoring Program. Since 2018, this program has provided free tutoring by certified teachers in reading, math, and science. During the 2023-2024 academic year, the program conducted more than 40,000 sessions, in person and online for Miami-Dade County students between kindergarten and 12th grade.

The tutoring program is available online on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and in person on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 29 public library locations throughout the county. Students can sign up for the program at mdpls.org/tutor.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) also offers public elementary and secondary grade students free help in core subjects with the Pop n’ Prep homework program online, Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students can register from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. for sessions up to 24 hours in advance. They need access to Microsoft Outlook and Teams and can visit popnprep.dadeschools.net to schedule a session.

More help beyond the classroom

Students may need academic help at any time of the year and parents can rely on various programs to support them. The Children’s Trust funds various after-school and summer programs for students of all ages  including K-5 with general literacy activities, and small-group literacy instruction for children reading below grade level. For younger children, STEM, arts, and specialized programming for children with disabilities are also available. For older kids in grades 6-12, the focus is on academic success, social and emotional learning, career skill-building, arts, STEM, civic engagement, sports, entrepreneurship, and college readiness.

While academics during the school year are a priority for parents and students, it’s equally important to continue learning during the summer to avoid the “summer slide,” where performance stalls or declines. This phenomenon is even more pronounced in disadvantaged children, with the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) showing significant racial disparities in proficiency levels. Among Miami-Dade fourth graders in 2022, 21 percent of Black, 40 percent of Hispanic, and 64 percent of White students reached recommended levels. Summer camps can protect against learning loss, especially in reading, while school is out.
