Miami’s Community Newspapers is proud to endorse Miami-Dade County Commissioner Raquel Regalado for re-election.
Regalado is the first Miami-born Hispanic woman ever elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission. If her name rings a bell, she is the daughter of former City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado.
That said, she’s creating a legacy of her own upheld by a deep commitment to the people she serves and the solutions she presents in response to the unique challenges Miami-Dade faces today — and tomorrow.
Regalado is an active leader in our community who strongly advocates for housing solutions, our schools, transportation, the fight against sea-level rise, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Commissioner Regalado’s decision to enter politics was fueled by her two children, both on the autism spectrum. Frustrated with the lack of options for kids with disabilities in public schools, she ran for the Miami-Dade County Public School Board in 2010, ultimately winning the seat for District 6.
During her time in office, she chaired the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Facilities and Construction Committee and restructured the district’s transportation system, saving taxpayers millions. The forward-thinking Regalado led initiatives to teach coding to all Miami-Dade County Public Schools students and advocated for M-DCPS’s first social media policy and cyberbullying prevention programs.
In 2020, Commissioner Regalado was voted Miami-Dade Commissioner for District 7. Right off the bat, she met COVID-related challenges head-on by helping pass the CARES Act. She has kept her finger on the pulse of our community by supporting the district and the county in the ever-present battle against one of its most pressing issues: sea level rise. Her primary focus is the septic-to-sewer conversions needed to stop the contamination of Biscayne Bay and invest in water infrastructure.
Regalado’s support for law enforcement and first responders has earned their endorsements. She has provided critical crisis intervention training to more than 2,100 police officers and 138 firefighters interacting with individuals on the autism spectrum. Her innovative Occupant with Autism decal program enhances community awareness and safety during emergencies.
A tireless steward of taxpayer dollars, she advocates for property tax cuts, financial relief for homeowners, and increased property tax rebates for low-income senior citizens. Her diverse efforts drive economic growth in her district and ensure affordability for its residents.
Because of her consistent efforts and stellar track record, Miami’s Community Newspapers supports Raquel Regalado for Miami-Dade County Commissioner. She is a dedicated public servant, and her passion to tackle difficult issues makes her the ideal candidate to continue serving District 7.
