By Coral Gables Commissioner Ariel Fernandez
Every two years, the Florida Legislature elects new leaders to preside over each chamber, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House.
On Tuesday, November 19th, the Florida House of Representatives elected a Miami-Dade County Representative who for the last six years has been one of the fiercest advocates for our community, Speaker Danny Perez.
I had the honor of attending Speaker Perez’s swearing in along with my colleague Commissioner Kirk Menendez and numerous other elected officials from Miami-Dade County who were present to celebrate this historic moment for our community.
Sitting in the gallery watching Speaker Perez with his wife, Stephanie, and three young children by their side as Supreme Court Justice John D. Couriel administered his oath of office, was a moving reminder of who we are as a state. A place where a son of immigrants sits as a Supreme Court Justice administering the Oath of Office to another son of immigrants to become the Speaker of the People’s House.
Speaker Perez, an alumnus of St. Theresa Catholic School in Coral Gables, addressed the House setting his goals for the next two years. He explained that he wants to ensure that Floridians understand that decisions made in Tallahassee are not going to be governed by special interests, rather that the Florida Legislature is led by and focused on the residents of our great state.
He sent his colleagues, and all elected officials present a message: residents “want elected leaders who are on their side.”
No truer words have been spoken. Every one of us who is elected to office must always remember that the residents are and must always be our priority.
I look forward to working with Speaker Perez in his leadership role and ensuring a Residents First government at every level.
