Less than a month after opening its first East Coast scoop shop in Miami’s Wynwood area, Salt & Straw opened a second Miami location in Coconut Grove.

Opened Mar. 11 in the newly reimagined CocoWalk, the small-batch, family-owned ice cream brand offers their curiously delicious flavors as well as some creations inspired by and uniquely made for the Magic City.

The redeveloped CocoWalk elevates Coconut Grove as Miami’s premier destination for those seeking al fresco retail, dining, and entertainment experiences. Salt & Straw will be among the notable national brands featured alongside local concepts and international brands.

“This neighborhood is full of some of the best restaurants in the city; it’s hard to not immediately fall in love with the close-knit community and incredible food in Coconut Grove,” said Tyler Malek, co-founder and head ice cream maker. “I think Salt & Straw will bring an extra energy to the neighborhood that’ll add to making this one of the greatest food destinations in the country.”

The scoop shop’s menu will mirror the Wynwood shop and feature Salt & Straw’s handmade cult classics and specialty flavors that tell the story of Miami through the unique chefs and artisans in the city.

A new month and new shop, also brings new seasonal flavors. Timed to CocoWalk’s opening, both shops will debut Salt & Straw’s Vault Series which will bring back five of the most epic flavors in the brand’s history for longtime fans to relive the past and younger ones to experience them anew. The flavors are selected by Tyler, who goes through thousands of recipes in Salt & Straw’s vault and selects some of the most pivotal creations.

The series is an opportunity for ice cream lovers to taste these iconic ice creams and delve into the brand’s creative process for a glimpse of how ingredients and flavors are captured through a Salt & Straw lens.

Guests can expect to find the all-time favorites such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Honey Lavender, Chocolate Gooey Brownie and Salted, Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough alongside unique flavors specific to the 305 and a handful of seasonal offerings — this month the Vault Series.

Miami Classic flavors will include:
Panther Coffee Chocolate Tres Leches
The Salty Donut Guava + Cheese
Wynwood Brewing Mango Habanero (v)
Exquisito Chocolates Hazelnut Cookies & Cream (v)

Vault Series flavors include:
Salted Caramel Cupcake – Seattle’s beloved Cupcake Royale shared their phenomenal Salted Caramel Cupcake recipe in exchange for the skinny on making ice cream. Chunks of chocolate cake slathered with salted caramel frosting and cake crumbs soak up the fleur de sel-spiked cream for a flavor that’s reminiscent of ice cream cakes from birthday parties past.

Cinnatopia Cinnamon Bun – “Cinnamon roll, cinnamon gaweyness with ribbons of frosting!” proclaimed Ella, the second-grader who dreamt up this runaway hit for Salt & Straw’s Student Inventor Series. It preserves each glorious part of the classic bun — fluffy roll, gooey filling, and cream cheese frosting—in cinnamon ice cream.

Strawberry Tres Leches – A study in strawberries: roasted strawberry ice cream, vanilla-y strawberry jam, gooey tres leches cake.

Brown Ale & Bacon – When Salt & Straw opened, maple bacon was everywhere, so they couldn’t completely skip the trend. Brown ale has a sweet maple-y flavor. This flavor marked the brand’s first-ever collaboration with a local brewery, now a favorite, and presented the challenge on how to mimic the brewing process in ice cream.

Lemon Cheesecake Crumble (v) – Creamy cashews are carving out a niche in vegan cheese culture with a lush texture you won’t believe is dairy-free. A blend of the loveliest cheese around with coconut yogurt and lemon zest for a tart cheesecake swirl, paired with an almond crumble reminiscent of graham cracker crust. The satin cheesecake gets layered into a salted vanilla coconut ice cream.

“We cannot wait to get to know the local community and share our ice cream with everyone,” said Kim Malek, co-founder and CEO. “I think folks will find this an experience like none other they’ve ever had…from our experimental flavor combinations, to our mercantile-like shops, and our lovely, caring team who take you on a flavor adventure and feel like old friends before you know it.”

Inspired by becoming a gathering place for the community, the space will showcase design direction from longtime partner, Portland-based Osmose Design, in tandem with Kim and Tyler, to create a warm, welcoming neighborhood spot to explore unbelievable ice cream flavors and connect with one another. Salt & Straw CocoWalk will represent the brand’s signature design, with curved oak edges, parquet wood inlay, custom terrazzo flooring and bespoke abstract waffle cone walls, creating a mood that’s both nostalgic and modern.

From Day One, the shop is implementing health and safety precautions in accordance with guidelines from the CDC, local government and health officials. Social distancing, capacity limitations, extensive sanitizing and mask requirements will all be part of the opening protocols.

Salt & Straw is open at its CocoWalk location, 3015 Grand Ave #145. The shop will be open noon-11pm. A second Salt & Straw Miami is located in Wynwood at 246 NW 25 St.
