In a contemporary program titled Jewish Voices, conductor James K. Bass leads the artists of Seraphic Fire in an a capella performance that elevates the voices of today’s Jewish composers.
Shirim L’yom Tov, a set of celebratory songs by Pulitzer-prize-winning composer Shulamit Ran, offers wisdom and inspiration. The contemporary sounds and thought-provoking music of Julia Wolfe, David Lang, and Moira Smiley examine the rich tapestry of the Jewish experience.
Dr. Mark Kligman, Milken Archives of Jewish Music at UCLA and consulting scholar for the Jewish Voices program, shares these insights for listeners: “Drawing upon known melodies is one approach of Jewish composers, another is writing music anew. Established Jewish folk melodies presented in a contemporary style provide a fresh approach that fuse tradition and innovation.
“Stacey Garrop’s Lo Yisa Goy is a Hebrew text taken from a passage in Isaiah 2:4 ‘May no nation rise up in war against another nation.’ Garrop draws upon a well-known melody from her childhood. By Shalom Altman, it is sung in Hebrew along with variants of the melody.”
When asked for his most anticipated piece in the concert, Maestro Bass replied, “Meredith Monk’s Astronaut Anthem is definitely a ‘don’t miss’ performance. Meredith Monk has long been celebrated as an experimental musician and performance artist. She wrote works for multiple voices, for choir, and never intended for them to be published. She wanted them to always be changing and evolving. They became so popular that she finally acquiesced.
For us to be able to perform this piece presents an unbelievable opportunity for our patrons.”
