You’ve Been Summoned!
Let’s talk about jury duty – yes, that official looking summons you may find in your mailbox. If you receive a summons, don’t panic — you’re helping keep justice alive in Miami-Dade County.
As your Clerk of the Court and Comptroller, my experienced jury team manages everything jury-related — from mailing out those summonses to making sure jurors get paid and trials run smoothly.
Each year, about 500,000 residents are selected randomly for jury duty. If you are chosen, you could be part of a civil trial at the historic Dade County Courthouse or a criminal trial at the Richard E. Gerstein Justice Building — both offer free parking for jurors. To qualify, you must be at least 18, a U.S. citizen, and a Miami-Dade resident. Served recently? You won’t be summoned again for at least a year and a day.
Can’t make it? Life happens! You may request a deferral or excusal for reasons like medical conditions, being the sole caregiver for someone, having a child under six, being over 70, attending school full-time, or serving in the military. My team reviews each request carefully.
And yes — you get paid for jury service. We also keep detailed records of attendance, payments, and more, all while working closely with our judges to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Watch out for jury duty scams. If someone contacts, you claiming you missed jury service and demands payment or personal info — it’s a scam. We will never call, email, or text you asking for money. Report suspicious messages to us or local law enforcement immediately.
