The Emmy and Gold Medal Award-winning South Florida Youth Symphony will conclude its 57th season with a world premiere composition, appearances by guest choirs and one of South Florida’s leading sopranos, May 22, at the Lehman Theater, 11380 NW 27 Ave. (Bldg. 5) on Miami Dade College’s North Campus.
The concert, which will feature all the training divisions of the SFYS program — including beginning strings, intermediate band, string consort, wind ensemble and symphonia — begins at 4 p.m. The theater is disabled-accessible.
Student harp sensation Yuuri Harper-Rosenberg’s original composition, Ocean Train, will premiere during the season finale concert. In addition, the SFYS student choir will join the Southwood Middle School choir and soprano Leticia Jack to perform Dry Your Tears, Afrika from the movie Amistad.
Student soloists Alejandro Mendez and Endia Sparks-Hardy will be highlighted during the event in a rarely performed Concerto for Clarinet, Viola and Orchestra by Max Bruch.
“This will be one of our most inspiring, family-oriented concerts,” said Marjorie Hahn, SFYS executive and music director. “In addition, because we’ll feature all of the developing classes and orchestras, the concert provides the community with insight into the wide range of opportunities for students who want to join the Youth Symphony.”
The SFYS program is sponsored with the support of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Miami-Dade County Mayor and County Commissioners, The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade County Office of Management and Budget, State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Kirk Foundation, Batchelor Foundation and Nancy Friday Foundation.
Tickets to the concert, which will be followed by a light reception, are $15 and are available at the door. For more information or to reserve tickets, phone 305-238-2729.
