SFYS’s Hahn to be honored with an ‘In the Company of Women’ award
Marjorie Hahn

Marjorie Hahn, longtime music and executive director of the South Florida Youth Symphony, has been named the winner of the Arts and Entertainment Award category in Miami-Dade County’s prestigious 33rd annual “In the Company of Women” award.

Presented in partnership with the Miami-Dade Commission for Women and the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, “In the Company of Women” honors those who have excelled professionally and contributed to the community and to women’s progress through their leadership and vision. Hahn will be honored, along with winners in 11 other categories, during a Mar. 10 dinner/awards ceremony at Coral Gables Country Club, 997 N. Greenway Dr. The evening begins with a 6 p.m. reception.

Now in her 50th year as an educator, conductor, and executive with the SFYS, Hahn, who has consistently reached out to the underserved and low-income families in areas that are continually overlooked by other music programs, joins a long list of prestigious winners of the award in the Arts and Entertainment category. This group of notables includes philanthropist Adrienne Arsht, salsa legend Celia Cruz and Grammy Award-winning recording artist Gloria Estefan.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected to join this list of outstanding women who have made a difference in the lives of children, particularly young girls, here in Miami-Dade County,” Hahn said.

During Hahn’s tenure at the helm of the organization founded by her late stepfather, Maestro Carmen Nappo, the SFYS has awarded over $400,000 in scholarships and instruments to in-need students. In the past five decades of her leadership, no child ever has been turned away because of an inability to pay.

“It fills me with pride to see so many talented women from across sectors being recognized with this award,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Thanks to women leaders like them and their many contributions to our community, we are opening the door for girls and women across Miami-Dade to dream big and use their passion, knowledge, and hard work to make our county a better place. I’m proud to have received this prestigious award several years ago and to stand with so many outstanding women role models.”
