Be aware of every situation…even those perhaps long forgotten

See Something-Say Something…..Rather cliche, is it not, these decades since 9-11? But it is far more than that. It is about a situational awareness that must be on-going endlessly, particularly in today’s times.
I have listened to some some amazingly suggestions regarding The Avid David and put those pearls of wisdom to work. But now back to the core.
I am not going to preach about why it is so important to have 360* awareness or learning to scan ( or if at all possible, avoid) crowds. Rather, I am going to bring up a point that I have not heard anyone bring up with all these recent attacks, most recently in Colorado with Molotov Cocktails. And just think for a moment if these were launched inside of a restaurant or movie theater instead of out in the open.
Point is, you need keep your ears and eyes open constantly. Let your guard down in the safety of your own home perhaps…But even then….well, it is up to you to decide what works for you. “Oh but you cannot be paranoid.” My reply is “Oh, but I cannot be dead. I have gotten used to life.”
Going back to the recent Molotov cocktail example and my horrid “what if” it was in a restaurant or theater. I vividly recall, on Miami Beach, where I grew up, in a cafeteria on South Beach in early 1973, some guy walked into the establishment, poured gasoline all over the place, and tossed lit matches onto the liquid before fleeing. three died and 100 were injured. The offender got away but turned himself into to a police station later.
We all absorbed all the security changes regarding air travel following 9-11. It has worked. And still I clearly recall a guy getting a gun out of his checked luggage at Ft. Lauderdale Airport some years back near at the luggage carousel and shooting up the place. More recently, the offender who killed two Israeli Consulate workers in DC also checked his gun into checked luggage.
I wonder out loud to no one in particular if someone ( or many terrorists) in a coordinated effort across the nations largest airports tossed Molotov cocktails or shot up the entrances of airports, how air travel would halt, how an strong economic hit would be felt, how our way of life would change after heavy consideration.
HEY DON’T GIVE NO ONE ANY IDEAS!
Yeah. That’s the problem. There are far too many that are naïve enough to think that no one has thought about such scenarios.
But I draw closer to the point of this article regarding the need for endless situational awareness.
Go back to September 1982 and the Tylenol Murders.
Go back to April 1995 and the Oklahoma Bombing.
These acts of domestic terrorism worked, yet have not been repeated…just yet. Do we ever give it a thought anymore, not with Tylenol, per se, but let’s say, herbal supplements perhaps in capsule form when we take them? Can this not happen again?
When we see a truck, perhaps a Ryder or U-Haul, alongside a large building with the blinkers on and the hood up, do we give it a second thought? We sure as hell would have if this was 1996 or 1997 or 1998. What changed? Like the cologne example I speak of. If Pierre Cardin smelled damn good in 1979, how does it smell like crap in 2019? Thing is, it does not. We just moved on from it, or Halston Z, or Paco Rabanne ( though I still wear the PR….WHAT??!!

The point is this: What worked before for those with nefarious intent, does not make it any less successful f tried again today….and that should scare the hell out of each and every one of this. Why is that not the case? Is it because we are sadly complacent?
We need to be on the look out for such things and report them immediately. More so, we cannot be ambivalent to the hatred and anger that is not merely over the horizon, but more so, interwoven among us.
I just got a bad feel that this pervasive evil is not going to lift, like some fog, any time soon. In fact, I think it will get worse. Are we up to the task of sifting this out?
