Six South Florida humanitarians to receive MCCJ’s highly coveted Silver Medallion

Since 1946, MCCJ has awarded the coveted Silver Medallion to outstanding leaders who have exhibited extraordinary humanitarian efforts in the community that mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community.

Paulo Coelho once said, “In a forest of a hundred thousand trees, no two leaves are alike. And no two journeys along the same path are alike.”

That is precisely what the theme for the 2019’s Humanitarian Awards will encompass and celebrate. The event is Saturday, Mar. 23, at the Inter Continental Miami, 100 Chopin Plaza, Miami, FL 33131 with 7:30 p.m. reception and 8:30 p.m. dinner.

More than 400 business and community leaders will attend the 2019 Humanitarian Awards Dinner featuring the presentation of the Silver Medallions to the following outstanding civic leaders: Ruth W. Greenfield, musical prodigy and activist; Saif Yamani Khan lshoof, Florida International University vice president of engagement; John C. Sumberg, managing partner at Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP; and Alexandra Villoch, Miami Herald president and publisher. The Reverend Diane Shoaf will be honored with The Clergy Medallion, and The Robert H. Traurig Lifetime Achievement Award will go to Burton Young, marital and family attorney.

The black-tie optional event will be hosted by WPLG Local 10’s Calvin Hughes, along with dinner chairs, Gail and Albert E. Dotson Jr., and honorary chairs Brian Dervishi, Michelle Ramirez-Patricios, and Rev. Dr. Patrick O’Neill.

This year’s Humanitarian Awards Gala will be dedicated to the memory of Roberta J. Shevin, who passed away last year after serving nine years as MCCJ’s executive director. She was particularly passionate about Camp MetroTown, where high school students meet every summer to tackle social justice issues such as bigotry, racism and bullying. In her honor, MCCJ will launch the Roberta J. Shevin MetroTown Scholarship Fund.
