Skanska finishes St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School projects
The 26,700-square-foot project consisted of constructing the 23,000-square-foot Arts and Innovation Center, a three-level building that houses the school’s academic programs, and a 3,700-square-foot Ministry Building.

Skanska, one of the world’s leading construction and development firms, has announced the completion of the $9.4 million Ministry Building and Arts and Innovation Center at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School in Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood.

Skanska provided preconstruction and construction management services on this K-12 school project, which included the demolition of two structures and construction of two new modern academic buildings known as the Ministry Building and the Arts and Innovation Center.

Designed by award winning architecture firm Perkins + Will, the 26,700-square-foot project consisted of constructing the 23,000-square-foot Arts and Innovation Center, a three-level building that houses the school’s academic programs, and a 3,700-square-foot Ministry Building.

The two-level Ministry Building features a reception area, administrative offices, and storage space on the first level, along with numerous classrooms and a kitchen to support church activities on the second level. In the Arts and Innovation Center, the first floor has a large function room for school and community gatherings, and the second and third floors contain classrooms, collaborative spaces for breakout sessions and restrooms.

Other project improvements included adding seating areas with a small open-air stage, parking lot restoration and landscaping, and hardscaping work surrounding the newly built academic buildings.

“The completion of the St. Stephen Episcopal Day School renovation and expansion underscores the importance of upgrading academic spaces to meet the evolving needs of today’s students,” said Michael C. Brown, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska Florida building operations. “With a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, or STEAM, educational programs, the school is preparing students for a bright academic future. At Skanska, we’re proud of our role in bringing this project to life that will help foster the next generation.”

Since the project construction was taking place close to the active school campus, the Skanska team adjusted its work schedule, including construction activities and deliveries of materials, to minimize disruptions during student drop-off and pickup times and the daily morning flag saluting ceremony. The school also required a high level of security to ensure the safety and privacy of students, which included maintaining construction work to a set perimeter and having one main access point to the job site.

With a long-term commitment to Miami and the broader South Florida region, Skanska has built projects such as the recently completed Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health and Las Olas Boulevard Beach Park. Currently, Skanska also is building the University of Miami’s Knight Recital Hall as well as the Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular Science in the university’s main campus in Coral Gables.
