South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL & Health Channel) proudly announces that Dolores Fernandez Alonso, President and CEO, has been honored with the 2025 Governors’ Award by the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
The prestigious award was presented on Saturday, December 6, 2025, during the Suncoast Regional Emmy® Awards Ceremony at The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida.
The Governors’ Award is the highest honor bestowed by the NATAS Suncoast Chapter and recognizes individuals or organizations whose work has made exceptional and transformative contributions to the television industry. This year’s award celebrates Fernandez Alonso’s visionary leadership and profound impact on public broadcasting in one of the nation’s largest media markets.
Throughout her tenure, Fernandez Alonso has led South Florida PBS through a period of extraordinary change and growth. Her leadership was instrumental in the successful merger of WPBT and WXEL, which unified two major stations and strengthened public media service across South Florida’s diverse communities.
Her commitment to community engagement and cultural enrichment is reflected in the launch of immersive exhibitions such as Da Vinci — An Immersive Experience, Egyptian Pharaohs: From Cheops to Ramses II, and Titanic: An Immersive Voyage, all designed to expand access to art,
history, and education for audiences across South Florida. This work is complemented by her leadership in developing the Bailey Cultural Arts Center and Taylor Performance Hall, further strengthening South Florida PBS’s role as a cultural hub for the community. She has also championed the adoption of NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) technology, positioning South Florida PBS as a leader in public safety broadcasting and enhanced viewer experiences.
Fernandez Alonso is equally recognized for supporting the growth of women in leadership within public media and for her influential service on multiple PBS national committees, where she contributes to shaping the future of public broadcasting on a national scale.
South Florida PBS congratulates Dolores Fernandez Alonso on this well-deserved honor and celebrates her ongoing commitment to strengthening, innovating, and elevating public media for the communities we serve.
