Student gets first-hand summer construction experience as intern
Cade Odom, an architecture major at the University of Miami, spent his summer working on a renovation project at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

While people may believe that college students spend their summer scrolling social media, many construction industry majors are putting what they learn in the classroom into action at the construction site.

National Internship Day, celebrated on July 25, highlights students such as Cade Odom, an architecture major at the University of Miami who is spending his summer doing the internship of his dreams at Skanska USA, a leading construction and development firm, where he has been working on a major renovation and expansion project taking shape at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami’s Health District.

This summer, Skanska welcomed 15 interns in Florida. High-value internship programs, such as Skanska’s, allow students to confirm their career choices, gain practical experience, and expand their networks, while giving companies a chance to develop talent for future full-time roles.

The project Odom worked on is the renovation and expansion of the emergency department at Jackson Memorial Hospital, one of the country’s leading and largest public health facilities, which will triple the size of the healthcare system’s flagship emergency department.

As an architecture student at UM, Odom has experienced first-hand the scale on which these projects operate. Back for his second internship at Skanska, he is learning from his mentor, Bob Kramer, a former intern who over his 20-year career at the company has advanced to the role of vice president-account manager.

Odom’s work on high-profile projects across various sectors has deepened his understanding of construction. At Jackson Hospital, Cade was involved in finishing both the interior and exterior of the new expansion.

“Starting my second internship at Skanska and working on the Jackson Memorial Hospital project has been an unforgettable journey,” Odom said. “Skanska has provided me with vast hands-on experience and endless learning opportunities.

“I’ve worked on large-scale projects, been entrusted with tasks and responsibilities that have further cemented my career plans post-graduation. I’m also forging invaluable relationships with my mentors and gaining access to resources that will help shape my career in construction.”

Kramer stressed the benefits of the internship program.

“Having been a Skanska intern myself, it’s been immensely rewarding to watch Cade advance his skills, gain hands-on experience in the field and share my experience of how my career has evolved over my over 20 years at Skanska,” Kramer said.

“Our interns have the advantage of working side-by-side with experienced construction industry professionals as they carry out the Jackson Memorial Hospital renovation and expansion project, which is a critical endeavor that will serve the healthcare needs of patients in the Miami community.”
