Some people are up with the birds each and every day. And while that may also be the case for Upper Eastside resident Brigitte Grosjean, it’s more about the promise – and the irresistible allure – of witnessing yet another brilliant sunrise over Biscayne Bay.
Clear skies or cloudy, on any given day, Grosjean never knows how this moment will play out upon the big sky and shimmering waters due east from her dedicated spot on the mainland shore of Biscayne Bay. Peering patiently out toward the Picnic Islands and the sprawling stretch of North Beach 3.5 nautical miles beyond, either way, she is ready with iPhone in hand to capture for herself and hundreds of her social media fans just what this day brings.
Perhaps it stems from Grosjean’s early years in jolly old and overcast London, or her innate eye for the aesthetic, hewed by years spent as a public relations agent on the European fashion circuit, working seemingly endless days and well into the wee hours.
But if that is the case, she is now determined to catch up on all those sunrises missed – and do so right here from one of the most beautiful vantage points in Miami – if not the entire country…
“I don’t even have to set an alarm anymore,” says Grosjean. “It’s the gift that just keeps giving that gets me up every day.”
So it comes as no surprise that on June 21 – Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere – that her work will be acknowledged and on display during an under-the-stars concert officially welcoming in the summer at the Miami Beach Bandshell.
On this night, from 6 to 9 p.m., Hermanos Gutierrez performs a free show at The Bandshell, 7275 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, FL 33141. It is said their music evokes scenes of nature – beautiful landscapes, sunrises, and sunsets.” A perfect backdrop by which to honor Grosjean’s photography indeed. Certainly not her first official recognition, just last month, the City of Miami Beach proclaimed May 22 “Brigitte Grosjean Day.” In a ceremony at City Hall, they honored her “demonstrated and unwavering commitment to capturing the beauty of Miami Beach’s mornings, by taking a breathtaking sunrise photograph every day for six years and overlooking for serene, expensive Biscayne Bay.”
The proclamation also recognized Grosjean, a former long-time resident of Miami Beach, for her achievements in the business world, having served as a public relations Director for Jungle Island for over two years; as well as her dedication to the welfare of Miami’s beloved dogs and cats, championing their well-being through rescuing and care initiatives.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing!” Grosjean said.
On our rotating spherical planet, the sun is unceasingly creeping over the horizon, but where does the first sunrise of the day happen? From an astrophysical perspective, there really isn’t a “first” sunrise. There’s just a series of perpetual sunrises happening farther and farther to the west – no true first, no true last.
But for as long as Brigitte is standing vigilant in her perfect little place on Earth, rest assured hers will be our first sunrise of the day, whether we are up with the birds or not.
