Tax Collector proposes ending yellow registration decal in Fla.

Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez recently announced a proposal calling on the Florida Legislature and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to eliminate the physical yellow registration decal currently placed on every Florida license plate.

Fernandez clarified that this proposal does not eliminate vehicle registration or the requirement to renew annually. Instead, it removes only the physical yellow sticker, which has become outdated and unnecessary thanks to modern digital verification systems used statewide.

“The physical yellow decal is no longer needed,” Fernandez said. “It fades, peels, gets stolen, and costs our residents money every year. Eliminating the physical decal is a common sense step forward for our state, one that saves money, reduces fraud, and embraces the technology we already have.”

Fernandez emphasized that removing the physical decal would generate an estimated savings of $2.5 million each year for residents of Miami-Dade County alone, by reducing production, mailing, and replacement costs.

He also noted that several states across the United States already have eliminated physical registration stickers, relying instead on digital systems that allow law enforcement to confirm registration instantly. In those states, drivers still maintain a valid registration, carry their registration card, and present it when requested.

Key benefits of removing the physical yellow decal include:
Significant Financial Savings for Residents – Miami-Dade County residents would save millions annually.

Greater Security and Fraud Reduction – Physical decals are frequently stolen or counterfeited. Digital verification prevents this.

More Efficiency and Convenience – Residents will no longer need to peel, replace, or wait for mailed stickers each year.

“As the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, my responsibility is to modernize our systems and reduce unnecessary burdens on our community,” Fernandez said. “We should not be asking families to stick something on their license plate when our technology already verifies registration in seconds. This is about efficiency, savings, and moving Florida forward.”

Fernandez will present this initiative to state leaders, the Florida Tax Collectors Association, and bipartisan partners across Florida.

“Florida families deserve a smarter and more modern process. Ending the physical yellow decal is a simple but powerful step in that direction.”
