On Saturday, February 6, 2021, eight churches in District 5, along with Healthy Little Havana and the Florida Division of Emergency Management, came together to host a COVID-19 vaccination event for 500 pre-registered older adults at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in East Little Havana. As part of the state’s COVID vaccination program, this effort was coordinated by the office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, District 5, as part of the County’s effort to ensure the equitable distribution of vaccines to seniors 65+ living in underserved and lower income neighborhoods.

“Psalm 9:18 says ‘For the needy shall not always be forgotten; the expectation of the poor shall not perish forever,’ and on Saturday, the District 5 community came together to remind our most vulnerable that they have not been forgotten by their faith leaders nor by government,” said Commissioner Higgins. “I am eternally grateful to our local community of faith that have been a source of hope and inspiration for so many of us during these challenging times.”

The event began with a prayer service led by Commissioner Higgins, together with the faith leaders of the participating churches, followed by the vaccination (Pfizer) of 500 pre-registered seniors at the state-run site. The vaccination candidates were identified by the following participating churches:

  • St. John Bosco Catholic Church
  • Gesu Catholic Church
  • Holy Comforter Episcopal Church
  • Iglesia Bautista Resurreción
  • Riverside United Methodist Church
  • St. Michaels the Archangel Catholic Church
  • Tamiami United Methodist Church
  • Wesley Hispanic United Methodist Church

The scheduling of appointments was facilitated by Healthy Little Havana, a community-based nonprofit organization that promotes healthy living among the residents of the Little Havana neighborhood in Miami, Florida.

“Our top priority is to protect our most vulnerable residents by distributing vaccines to seniors in all corners of our community. Miami-Dade County is proud to work alongside our faith community, nonprofit leaders, and the state to bring the life-saving COVID-19 vaccine directly to our seniors in Little Havana,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
