James R. Haj, President and CEO of The Children’s Trust

The Children’s Trust is deeply committed to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive during the school year. The first days and weeks of classes bring a flurry of activities that help our children and youth develop, and their growth is not confined to the classroom.

After school, often when parents are still at work, represents another opportunity for kids to flex their academic, physical, and social muscles. During these hours, children can   engage in activities that enrich their lives.

Beyond vital academic support—with tutors and time to concentrate on homework freeing up other parts of their day – after-school programs provide a structured environment where children can enjoy fun activities, build lasting friendships, and receive nutritious meals. Research shows that children who participate in well-structured after-school programs perform better in school, exhibit positive social behaviors, and develop a stronger sense of self-worth, leading to a sense of pride and hope for parents and caregivers.

While children and youth can take advantage of all the opportunities available in after-school programs, parents also benefit from knowing their children are safe and engaged in productive activities, eating well, and building meaningful relationships. After-school programs play a critical role in providing not only a haven but also a nurturing environment where children can grow academically, socially, and emotionally, fostering a sense of community and support for parents and caregivers.

The Children’s Trust invests in various after-school programs catering to diverse interests and needs. These programs, from arts and STEM to sports, civic engagement, and entrepreneurship, are designed to help children explore their passions and develop new skills. For older youth, programs that include job training and coaching can lead to valuable summer jobs and internships, setting them on a path toward future success.

Our community is fortunate to have many options available. For the second year, we have partnered with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade County, and Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS) to launch the “More After-School Choices” initiative. This initiative provides a comprehensive list of available programs through the JCS’ 211 Miami helpline (www.211miami.org/afterschool), making it simple for parents to find programs that meet their needs and are conveniently located.

The school year is an excellent opportunity for students in the classroom and beyond.  Our commitment to supporting after-school programs reflects our belief that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.
