The Miami Marlins and New York Mets kicked off their four-game series with an exciting season opener on Thursday night, with the Mets ultimately coming out on top with the final score 5-3.
It was a slow start for the Marlins, as the Mets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Luis Arráez hit an RBI double for the Marlins, sending the ball out to the right-center-field gap and allowing Jacob Stallings to put the Marlins on the board. Shortly after, Garett Cooper followed up with a two-run home run, tying up the game.
Heading into the seventh inning, the Mets responded with a 2-RBI double to center field from Brandon Nimmo, which ultimately proved to be the game-winning hit as Nimmo was able to drive in Eduardo Escobar and Omar Narvaez.
On the pitching side, last season’s NL CY Young recipient, Sandy Alcántara threw for 5.2 innings for the Marlins, allowing three runs, three hits, two strikeouts, and four walks. Meanwhile, Max Scherzer tossed for 6 innings for the Mets, allowing three runs, four hits, six strikeouts, and two walks.
As the series continues tonight, Jesús Luzardo will take to the mound for the Marlins while David Peterson will pitch for the Mets. This NL East rivalry promises to bring more excitement and thrilling moments in the games to come.
