Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins (District 5) on Monday, Oct. 27, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Play Spot, a new community space located along SE Fifth Street underneath the Metromover in Brickell, with views of the scenic Miami River.
Designed as a vibrant urban oasis, the Play Spot will feature a modern playground, lush shade trees, and a welcoming area for families to relax and enjoy the heart of Miami’s urban core. The new park transforms a previously underutilized space into a lively, people-centered destination that encourages connection, play, and community gathering.
The Play Spot is the last of three projects championed by Commissioner Higgins to activate public spaces underneath the Metromover in Brickell and Downtown. Together with the Dog Spot and the Connect Spot, this trio of projects is creating a network of accessible, engaging, and green areas that enhance quality of life and promote community well-being.
“The Play Spot is about creating joy in the middle of our city,” Commissioner Higgins said.
“Brickell is one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in Miami, but families surrounded by buildings and traffic deserve spaces to relax, play, and connect. With the Play Spot, we’re turning what was once an overlooked corner into a place filled with laughter, shade, and community. It’s one more step in making the urban core a place for everyone.”
The Play Spot project is a collaboration between Commissioner Higgins’ Office; Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces; the Department of Transportation and Public Works; the Miami Downtown Development Authority, and community partners committed to reimagining public spaces for all residents.
