Another restoration project funded by The Villagers has been completed at Vizcaya.
A standing stone candelabrum has been finished successfully including stabilizing the massive piece and visually reintegrating surfaces. Conservators also removed prior failed repairs, carefully cleaning each section.
Work was conducted in the courtyard of the Main House allowing visitors to witness a conservation project in process. The piece is estimated to be from the late first/early second century AD. It was one of several ancient marbles James Deering purchased to decorate Vizcaya’s Main House and gardens.
“We were happy to be able to support this project,” said Marie Vacca, Villager president.
“Many visitors don’t realize the time, effort, and funds needed to preserve Vizcaya and all its beautiful historic interior furnishings.”
The Villagers have completed numerous restoration projects for Vizcaya throughout the past 50 years. One of Miami-Dade’s most valuable public attractions, Vizcaya is a National Historic Landmark.
The Villagers Inc. is Miami-Dade County’s oldest historic preservation organization, founded in 1966. The not-for-profit all-volunteer group has assisted locally endangered sites with 170 grants. Through educating, advocating, fundraising, restoration, and documentation
