UHealth’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute remains the No. 1 eye hospital in the U.S., according to the newly released 2024 “Best Hospitals” rankings.
It is the 23rd time (and 21st consecutive year) U.S. News & World Report has recognized Bascom Palmer with the nation’s best ophthalmology hospital ranking.
U.S. News & World Report also ranked UHealth – University of Miami Health System’s neurology/neurosurgery program No. 25 in the U.S. Two programs, cancer and geriatrics, were recognized as “high performing,” a designation for hospital specialties that are in the top 10 percent of all rated hospitals.
“We’re proud of all our programs that continue to excel in serving our patients. It’s gratifying to be recognized by other organizations, but the most rewarding aspect is our patient outcomes, which continue to be outstanding,” said Dipen J. Parekh, MD, chief operating officer of UHealth, executive dean for clinical affairs and founding director of the Desai Sethi Urology Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “This is a testament to the dedication and excellence of our clinical faculty and staff.”

Alfonso, MD, the Kathleen and Stanley J. Glaser Chair in Ophthalmology and Bascom Palmer’s director and chair. “The well-being of our patients inspires us to excel in patient care, vision research, ophthalmic education and surgical innovation.”
The Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial Hospital continued its ascendency, earning a ranking of No. 31 in the nation this year, up from No. 45 in 2023. Regionally, UHealth Tower maintained its ranking as No. 3 in South Florida and No. 9 in Florida.
This year, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in South Florida, received “high performing” designations in colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery and gynecological cancer surgery, as well as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
U.S. News also awarded “high performing” status to the UHealth specialties of aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, kidney failure, pneumonia and heart attack. These specialty procedure and condition ratings focus on specific and more commonly required, individual procedures and diseases.
Henri Ford, MD, MHA, dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School, said, “Between Bascom Palmer, urology, pulmonology, Sylvester’s cancer care, cardiology and geriatrics, we are being recognized for our care of the most complex diseases. There is no doubt the research, coupled with the excellence and compassion behind our care, is what fuels our success.”
“Our experts advance the field of neurological disorders through an integrated and personalized approach,” said Jose Romano, MD, professor and chair of neurology at the Miller School. “We translate the latest discoveries into clinical care provided at recognized centers of excellence and spanning all neurological subspecialties, therefore delivering on the mission of academic medicine.”
Allan D. Levi, MD, PhD, professor and chair of neurosurgery and the Robert M. Buck Distinguished Chair in Neurological Surgery at the Miller School and chief of neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, said, “Our surgeons are recognized for developing innovative procedures and exploring new ways to advance care for patients with brain, spine and nerve disorders. This approach, as well as major research advances in the neurosciences, has earned them recognition from their peers.”
U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on data from nearly 5,000 medical centers and survey responses from more than 30,000 physicians. The complete 2024-25 rankings are available online and in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals” 2024 guidebook.
