United Way of Miami-Dade recently hosted a dedication ceremony honoring Miguel “Mike” B. Fernández for his unparalleled support of Mission United and his own service in the United States Army. The dedicated flag monument, which represents liberty, strength, unity and pride now adorns the front of the United Way Empowerment Building, facing Coral Way.

“The United Way Empowerment building serves as a single point of entry for our veterans to get the help they need,” said Rasheem Howell, interim director, United Way Mission United. “Mission United is a safe zone for Miami-Dade veterans where they share stories, learn from each other, have a few laughs and never shy away from serious conversations that help heal wounds.”

The Fernández gift of $885,000 in 2017 allows Mission United to serve veterans who are reintegrating into civilian life here in Miami-Dade.

“It’s a great day that we’re able to dedicate this flag monument and empowerment building to the people who serve our country,” said Mike B. Fernández, chair and CEO, MBF Healthcare Partners. “Individuals who have given their time, their blood, their sacrifice so the rest of us can enjoy the life that we live today.”

The flag monument marks the completion of the community service building, which houses two of United Way’s signature programs: Mission United, to help veterans and their families re-acclimate to civilian life in meaningful and supportive ways, and the United Way Center for Financial Stability to empower working families by offering a full range of free services.
