Vizcaya Museum and Gardens has announced an open call for artists for its “Lost Spaces and Stories of Vizcaya” Contemporary Arts Program (CAP).
Vizcaya is seeking up to eight local artists/collaborations to create site-specific artwork, which will bring back spaces and stories that have been lost or transformed by nature and time. Artists who are interested in learning more or applying, must attend one of the remaining information sessions which are taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 25, and Wednesday, Mar. 25, at 6 p.m. RSVP for the information sessions is required.
The deadline to submit entries is Apr. 30 at 5 p.m. The project will be juried by a committee organized by Vizcaya. The installations of the selected artwork will begin in April 2016 and be on view for 12 months.
During the past 100 years, nature and time have transformed Vizcaya and many of its most compelling spaces and stories have been lost. By commissioning local artists to create site-specific artwork, Vizcaya will bring these spaces and stories back to life. Among the lost spaces included are the Summer House on the Barge, Recreational Rooms (currently the site of the Vizcaya Café and Shop), Moat, Casino Rooms and Fountain Garden Swing.
Through the Contemporary Arts Program (CAP), Vizcaya Museum and Gardens invites artists to develop site-specific work inspired by the estate and draws connections between past and present. CAP is made possible through support from The Danielson Foundation, Stella M. Holmes and the Chauncey and Marion D. McCormick Family Foundation.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark that preserves the Miami estate of agricultural industrialist James Deering to engage our community and its visitors in learning through the arts, history and the environment. Built between 1914 and 1922, Vizcaya is one of the most intact remaining examples from this era in United States history, when the nation’s most successful entrepreneurs built lavish estates inspired by the stately homes of Europe.
Located at 3251 S. Miami Avenue, between Brickell Avenue and Coconut Grove, Vizcaya is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except Tuesdays, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
