Nestled beside Peacock Park on South Bayshore Drive, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club (CGSC) may appear to be just another scenic spot along Biscayne Bay. But look a little closer, and you’ll find something far more remarkable — a vibrant community hub where learning, service, and connection come together in meaningful ways.
Since 1946, CGSC has anchored itself in the heart of Miami’s waterfront scene. But in recent years, the club has deepened its role as a public-serving institution. Through educational events, youth outreach, and partnerships with civic organizations, CGSC’s mission now stretches well beyond its sailing-center amenities.
“We are so proud to share our beautiful facility with widely recognized civic groups, many of which have used our meeting room or other parts of the club for years,” explains Executive Director Lauren Simpson. “We’ve hosted the City of Miami, the Rotary Club, local firefighters, NAMI, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and many others.”
These gatherings aren’t exclusive — they’re open to all. “Speaker series events and seminars are public and free,” she adds. “Whether we’re covering Biscayne Bay health, coral reef protection, or sailing around the world, our goal is to help people walk away with something valuable — a new skill, a fresh perspective, or even a new passion.”
Topics range from CPR workshops and hurricane prep to presentations on transatlantic sailing and invasive species. There’s even a free Wednesday night sailing program that welcomes anyone — no experience or membership required. “I’ve met someone at a restaurant, told them about it, and the next thing I know, they’re sailing with us,” Simpson says. “That’s what community-building looks like.”
CGSC also partners with the Rotary Club of Coconut Grove to fund sailing scholarships for children from the City of Miami — many of whom have never been on the water before. “It’s about access,” Simpson says. “Many families don’t even realize the bay is right there for them to enjoy. These scholarships make that discovery possible.”
And for Simpson, summer camp represents CGSC at its best: “We serve 85 kids a day for nine weeks. It’s intense, but the joy on their faces — that’s everything.”
The vibe? “Welcoming, inspiring, and warm,” she says. “We’ve had people meet here, become lifelong friends — even get married! Whether it’s your first time on a boat or your hundredth regatta, there’s a place for you.”
Looking ahead, Simpson hopes to expand educational programming, protect the environment, and grow CGSC’s philanthropic reach. “We want to grow in ways that matter,” she says. “Our members make this mission possible, and I’m truly grateful for that.”
