Women, educators, doctors and volunteers rock

Miami Women Who Rock gathered at the Coconut Grove Festival Art Gallery on May 11 to announce their “Fifty Shades of Pink” award recipients being honored at their third annual luncheon in the fall.

NBC6 morning anchor Sheli Muniz emceed the program announcing this year’s women being recognized for their outstanding community service: Ileana Bravo, Bina Fink, Lilia Garcia, Virginia Jacko, Luynette Janac, Addys Kuryla, Natalie Leon, Lilliam Machado and Patricia San Pedro.

Each recipient will receive an award inspired by the mosaic art of Jacki Gran. The luncheon will take place at the Coral Gables Country Club on Sept. 30, at 11:30 a.m. To purchase tickets or sponsor a table, visit <http://miamiwomenwhorock.org>. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit Your Bosom Buddies, an organization that benefits breast cancer support groups, founded by MWWR’s 2015 “Pink Warrior” award recipient, Linda Burrowes.

Yet another wonderful nonprofit, The Nail Scholarship Foundation, celebrated its first Awards Dinner on May 20 at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. The affair served to recognize Raquel A. Regalado for her commitment to education and service on the Miami-Dade County School Board with the presentation of The Martha Nail Excellence in Education Award. Christopher Nail, president and founder of this 501(c)(3) nonprofit, created this award honoring his mother whose is a teacher.

Arely Ruiz emceed the evening thanking several important sponsors including the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Coral Gables Men’s Club, Disfrutar magazine, Nejma Perfumes, and Piononos as well as all the others donating items to the auction.

Among the many attending the event included Raquel’s father, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado; Sheli Muniz, NBC 6 Morning Anchor; renown hairstylist John Taboas; Chiara Migani, of Figurella, and other Coral Gables Woman’s Club members including Mayra Dominguez, Yvonne Elejalde, Ruth Martinez, Valerie Valenzuela, and Diane Superville.

The Marc Jaiden Project celebrated its “Vision with a Heart” gala on May 14 at the Intercontinental Hotel. A relatively young foundation founded by ophthalmologist Marc Jaiden and wife, Melissa, the foundation already has provided screenings for 20,000 individuals, completed eye exams for 15,000 and donated glasses to 12,000.

They have conducted missions to Haiti and Jamaica with their awesome volunteers and are committed to that outreach. Among the many enjoying the evening were their foundation vice president Andre Boykin and Lauren Cahill who shared a testimonial. Awards were presented as well to Karen Pennye Brown, Volunteer of the Year; Juan and Laura Martinez as well as Mr. and Mrs. Sacedo as Distinguished Donors. Additional honorees included Sanjay Smith, MD, who was presented the Distinguished Recognition Award, and MedEye Associates, the Distinguished Humanitarian Award.

While Marc and his group are working with vision, the Tooth Healer Foundation is supporting local and international efforts to help nonprofits providing those in need with dental services. The organization recently donated and committed support the the Coral Gables Woman’s Club Children’s Dental Clinic where children from throughout Miami Dade County who fall between the cracks in the healthcare system are provided with free dental care.

Finally, congratulations go out to Brett Trembly who was installed as president of the South Miami-Kendall Bar Association at the end of the year banquet on June 1.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
