GMYS Orchestras and Band will perform two exciting concerts on Saturday, May 7, featuring the 2011 GMYS Concerto Competition winners, the Florida premiere of the New Music Miami youth orchestra composition competition, and a wide variety of other classical and popular works. The concerts will take place at 3 and 5 p.m. at the Florida International University Wertheim Performing Arts Center, 10910 SW 17 St.
In February 2011, students competed at the Deering Estate for a chance to perform a concerto with the GMYS Concert or Symphony orchestras. The competition was judged by two music professors from the University of Miami Frost School of Music.
Eighth grade student Erica Ogihara won the Symphony Orchestra division and will perform a movement of the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No. 1 and fifth grade student Sarah Busse won the Concert Orchestra division and will perform a movement from the Vivaldi Violin Concerto in A minor. Busse will perform during the 3 p.m. concert and Ogihara will perform during the 5 p.m. program.
The 3 p.m. concert will include performances by the GMYS Young Mozarts, String, and Concert Orchestras, as well as the GMYS Concert Band and Jazz Band. Works to be performed include Grieg’s Holberg Suite, Go West by Ralph Ford, an arrangement of Brahm’s Academic Festival Overture, Clocks by Coldplay, and La Negra Tiene Tumbao arranged by Victor Lopez.
The 5 p.m. concert will highlight the GMYS Symphony Orchestra, the flagship ensemble of GMYS. The Symphony will perform the Florida premiere of Cauldron by David Heuser, the New Music Miami Festival youth orchestra composition competition winning selection from over 50 submitted works. Other works to be performed include Rimsky Korsakov’s Russian Easter Festival Overture, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. GMYS chamber ensembles also will perform, including Dvorak’s American String Quartet. GMYS graduating seniors and the GMYS Smiddy Scholarship Winner also will be recognized.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. Tickets are good for both concerts.
The GMYS is a diverse community organization comprised of youths (ages 5-18) from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. For the past 50 years, the Greater Miami Youth Symphony has been a vital force in the community.
