Broward Health Medical Center is now offering the InterStim™ X system from Medtronic, a cutting-edge treatment for patients with bladder and bowel control conditions such as urinary and fecal incontinence (FI).
Felice De Stefano, M.D., a colorectal surgeon with the Broward Health Physician Group, is leading the implementation of this treatment at Broward Health’s flagship hospital.
“Our goal is to help patients regain control over their lives by offering the latest advancements in treatment,” Dr. De Stefano said.
According to the National Library of Medicine, 33 million adults in the United States suffer from overactive bladder. “The system works through an implantable device by gently targeting the sacral nerves that control normal bowel function,” Dr. Stefano said. “This may help to reduce the symptoms of incontinence and trips to the bathroom.”
The InterStim™ X system sits beneath the skin and is powered by a small neurostimulator in the upper buttock. This innovative treatment offers several key benefits, including:

- Discreet smart programmer: A handheld device resembling a smartphone, allowing patients to adjust their therapy independently at home or on the go.
