Leadership Broward’s Class 44 Community Project will transform ChildNet’s SafePlace shelter into a supportive and safe space for children entering foster care.

ChildNet, the Community-Based Care Lead Agency for Broward and Palm Beach Counties, is proud to announce that Leadership Broward’s Class 44, Broward County’s premier leadership development training organization, has selected its SafePlace shelter as this year’s Community Project. The initiative will transform SafePlace, a ChildNet-operated shelter in Broward County, into a calming, safe environment designed to support children as they enter foster care.

Each year, more than 150 children—from newborns to teenagers—arrive at SafePlace, often scared, confused, and uncertain about their future. The facility provides a critical first step in the foster care journey, offering a safe, stable environment where trained staff deliver compassionate care during an especially vulnerable time.

As part of the project, Leadership Broward participants will redesign the shelter to promote healing and resilience. Planned improvements include soothing color palettes to reduce anxiety, inspiring artwork and murals, a therapeutic sensory garden, and practical upgrades such as cabinetry, furniture, and storage, all designed to create a warm, welcoming space.

“This project is about more than renovating a building. It is about giving children a space where they can begin to feel safe, valued, and supported during a challenging time in their lives,” said Larry Rein, ChildNet CEO & President. “We are thrilled to have the support of Leadership Broward to transform this facility into a space that reflects the dignity, hope, and resilience every child deserves.”
