Tucked into a modest Oakland Park strip mall, Fat Freddy’s Sub Shop has earned a reputation as one of the area’s best-kept culinary secrets. Known for its generously stuffed cheesesteaks and cold subs – better known as “chop chop,” The shop recently expanded its menu to include juicy smashburgers—made “the right way, your way.”

Owner Cathy Cerniglia says, “Whether it’s a steak sub, chicken sub, egg sub, or a platter, we’ve got you covered. People tell us all the time this is the best sub shop of them all—and we love seeing them leave happy.” Prior to Cerniglia acquiring the business in Spring 2025, Fat Freddy’s had been operating in this location for 30 years.

“We had a vision to reinvent Fat Freddy’s on a more elevated scale,” she said, “With upgrades to the interior space and kitchen, and the introduction of meat products that are top quality for this shop – mission accomplished!” Cerniglia is also beloved in the community for running the iconic Over Easy Café on Oakland Park Blvd. for more than 45 years.

One of Fat Freddy’s standout features is its striking hand-painted mural that spans the entire length of the shop’s wall. Created this summer by two Northeast High School students and their teacher, the vibrant scene celebrates local businesses and landmarks, stretching from the Everglades to A1A—with Northeast High proudly featured at its center.

Customers rave about the thin-sliced ribeye cheesesteaks, packed with onions, mushrooms, and melted cheese on hearty Italian-style rolls—described as more flavorful and meatier than the famous Philly originals. Others swear by the new smashburgers, crafted with fresh ingredients and served in a spotless, welcoming atmosphere.

From salads to subs, Fat Freddy’s stays true to its playful motto—“Stuffing Your Buns ALLways”—while proving that hole-in-the-wall charm, quality ingredients, and community spirit still reign supreme.
