We understand that higher water bills can be frustrating, and we want to provide clarity on why rates have changed and how you can better manage your water use. While rates have increased, some bill spikes may be due to hidden leaks or changes in household consumption.
Why Are My Rates Higher?
As part of Fort Lauderdale’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure, the City is making critical improvements to ensure a more reliable, efficient and sustainable water system for all residents.
Prospect Lake Clean Water Center
- The City is constructing a state-of-the-art water treatment facility to replace the aging Fiveash Water Treatment Plant.
- This new facility will ensure cleaner, safer water that meets the highest quality standards.
Smart water meters – a new tool for you
In the coming months, the City will begin installing smart water meters that use real-time technology to:
Provide more accurate billing
Detect leaks faster so you can avoid unexpected high bills
Empower residents to track their own water use through an online portal
Planned rate adjustments
To fund these essential improvements, the City Commission approved gradual rate increases starting in October 2023. The most recent increase took effect on Oct. 1, 2024:
Water rates increased by 22.5%
Wastewater (sewer) rates increased by 9%
Additional increases are planned each October through 2028, with adjustments designed to balance infrastructure needs while keeping costs manageable for residents.
Could a Leak Be Causing Your High Water Bill?
Some residents have reported higher-than-normal water use, and in many cases, a hidden leak may be the culprit. Even small leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water each month.
A running toilet can waste up to 200 gallons per hour. That’s nearly 4,800 gallons per day! This can add hundreds of dollars to a monthly bill.
Other common household leaks include:
- Dripping faucets – A slow drip can waste up to 3,000 gallons per year.
- Irrigation system leaks – A broken sprinkler head can waste hundreds of gallons per watering cycle.
- Pipe leaks under sinks or inside walls – These often go unnoticed but can cause spikes in your bill.

High Water Bill Adjustment Options
Residents experiencing unusual or high water consumption may apply for a one-time bill adjustment using the form below.
Application for High Use Billing Adjustment
Leak Adjustment: If a repaired leak caused the high bill, you may apply for an adjustment. Proof of repairs (such as receipts) is required. If a leak is suspected but not yet identified, a licensed plumber inspection is recommended. This adjustment recalculates your bill at the lowest tier rate.
Unexplained Consumption Adjustment: If no cause for the high usage is found, you may apply for a one-time credit per service location. This adjustment recalculates your bill at the lowest tier rate.
