AMG brand stands apart, with unique vehicles that are not based any other Mercedes-Benz products. So let’s talk about the scintillating 2020 Mercedes GT63 S is the German brand’s latest versions of a “four-door coupe” using the bones of the E-class, that were all new just last year.

Up to this point, Mercedes-Benz has focused its efforts on two-door performance cars – but that all changed with this car, the AMG GT S 4-door coupe. It’s a car that bucks all the trends, packing supercar performance into a 4-door car body.

The potent GT63 S model delivers the comfort and practicality of a family-friendly hatchback sedan but with the intense power and performance of a supercar. With a thunderous twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, this beauty goes from zero-to-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds – with its larger 20-inch wheels and tires offering additional grip.

It’s also the only variant to feature a standard Drift Mode within its all-wheel-drive system. Just push the button, and the GT63 S becomes rear-wheel drive for more spirited track driving –and bad-boy burnouts and power slides (I did not partake in such activities, officer…).

There are actually three versions of AMG’s 4-door; the GT 53 with 429-horspower turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6; the GT 63 with 577-horsepower from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8; and my test vehicle, the GT 63 S.

From the rear, the hips look almost 911ish, and it’s also way bigger in person than it looks in photos; it definitely sticks out in any crowd. And, I have to say, despite this 4-door coupe being a physically big car, it sure didn’t feel like it from where I was sitting.

Under the hood of the 2020 GT63 you’ll find a technological marvel with dry-sump oiling, direct injection, and two turbochargers mounted in its V. It’s rated to produce up to 630 horsepower. Each models also gets a dual-clutch nine-speed automatic transmission that delivers shifts that are as quick as they are brutal. Oh, by the way, my Mercedes got 15 city and 20 highway MPG.

There may be a slew of sensors collecting data on everything that you and this car do together, but there’s nothing sensitive looking about it. Even with overall smoothness to most body panels, it has a very aggressive machine-like appearance.

So what’s new for 2020?
Since the AMG GT53, GT63, and GT63 S were all-new models for 2019, not much has changed this year. However, Mercedes has made AMG illuminated doorsills standard on the GT53 and the AMG performance exhaust standard on the GT63.

The interior design overall is futuristic and visually exciting. Things are surprisingly spacious in the rear seat for two, even with the sloping roofline. And, there’s even 12.7 cubic-ft. of cargo space, with optional folding seatback flexibility.

Suggested retail price is $161,200. With optional equipment and added value packages, my test car managed to top out at just $199,505.

If you get behind the wheel of the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT S 4-door coupe, I am sure you’ll agree that it is utterly fantastic.
