Do you like whimsical horror with a touch of the macabre? Well, Fantagraphics has you covered with one of their latest reprints. ‘Night Drive’ was first published by Sala himself with only 500 copies ever made, it being his breakout hit. An essay from a longtime friend of Sala’s opens this book alongside interviews, a blog post from Richard Sala himself, and an afterword by Daniel Clowes who also designed the wonderful hardcover housing all this content. The fine folks over at Fantagraphics have really made sure this is a special release.
The story, if you want to call it that, feels like a strange TV channel that only appears after midnight during the ghoulish hours of the night, where nightmares go to breed and dreams exploited. Most of the stories in Night Drive are just one or two page stories that suggest a loose story through emotional abstraction, much like David Lynch’s films. The longest stories in the collection ‘Night Drive’ & ‘Invisible Hands’. ‘Night Drive’ is by no means a long read, but what is here makes the reading experience tangible, every page welcomes some new horror that tugs at you. Pointed out in one of the essays is Sala’s love for B-movies and Hammer films, and Sala wears these inspirations on his sleeve.
From the very start of reading this book I knew it was going to be a special read. From essays and interviews, the amazing comic itself, and the afterword by one of comics greatest voices. This release feels essential to any Ricahrd Sala fans or even ones interested in this type of story. Hopefully we see more Richard Sala reprints in the coming years. No one did horror comics quite like him, and ‘Night Drive’ is a good reminder of Richard Sala’s genius.
