If you take a leisurely stroll down Florida’s Historic Ybor City you will come across cigar rollers working diligently in the store front windows, tattoo shops, New York Style Pizzerias, and … a “Mushroom Dispensary” might catch your eye…
Chillum, which boast that they are the first Hemp Dispensary in Tampa Bay, is now adding mushroom products to their product line. A venture they believe in so strongly that they are now calling themselves a Mushroom Dispensary. The store now stocks different grow kits, spores and mycology cultures, functional mushrooms and yes…. Magic Mushrooms! The catch is these magic mushrooms are legal by federal law, cause these mushrooms don’t contain psilocybin but chemicals that are legal and surprisingly similar… Yes, they make you trip!
The owner of Chillum Mushroom and Hemp Dispensary is entrepreneur and activist Carlos Hermida, who has a longstanding background in the cannabis and hemp movement. In other words, he has a long history of fighting bad drug laws. Hermida is cofounder and Deputy Director of the local chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws or Suncoast NORML. Formed in 2014, Suncoast NORML has assisted United for Care in their successful medical marijuana legalization efforts, and they also played a big role in the decriminalization of cannabis in Tampa, Pinellas, and Orange County. Carlos also founded Chillum in 2018, which was the first Hemp Dispensary in the Tampa Bay area.
“I was heavily involved in the cannabis and hemp movement in Tampa Bay and across Florida and I see psychedelics and mushrooms in particular as the next big step toward freedom,” Carlos Hermida said.
Now Chillum is selling mushroom products as well as advocating for change with psilocybin. You wont find any psilocybin, or any controlled substances for that matter, at Chillum, instead you find a number of different products that promote the study of mycology. Like their grow kits and mycelium cultures.
“Psilocybin is still illegal, but the study of mycology is very legal as long as there is no psilocybin present.” explained Hermida, “That is why we sell mycelium for psilocybin mushrooms. It is our hope that in promoting the study of psilocybin will promote the legalization or all magic mushrooms. That being said, if you express the want to grow these mushrooms, we legally have to deny you service.”
Hermida claims to have been inspired by what is currently happening in Vancouver. Although psilocybin is still illegal in Canada, cannabis dispensaries have started to dispense the magic mushroom. This happens only because the Vancouver Police Department tolerates it. Although the police department acknowledges that psilocybin is illegal, they want to focus on violent and harmful criminals who traffic harmful opioids. This has caused several different Mushroom Dispensaries to pop-up all-around Vancouver!
