Today marks 50 years since FIU opened its doors as a one-building university on an abandoned airfield.
Fifty years later, FIU is among the top research institutions in the nation and is the fastest-rising on the U.S. News and World Report public university ranking. U.S. News this week also ranked FIU among the top five universities for social mobility. These rankings come on the heels of two other placements from Degree Choices and Washington Monthly College Rankings that ranked FIU among the top 25 universities nationally for the economic return on graduates’ investment, and placed FIU at No. 32 nationally, respectively.
To celebrate FIU’s trajectory and the accomplishments of nearly 300,000 graduates, most of whom live and work in South Florida, several campus buildings and Miami-Dade County landmarks are lighting up in FIU blue and gold, including:
- Freedom Tower at 600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami
- Miami-Dade County Courthouse at 73 West Flagler Street, Miami
- Biltmore Hotel at 1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables
- Hialeah Entrance Plaza at 399 E. Okeechobee Rd., Hialeah
- Miami Beach City Hall at 1700 Convention Ctr Dr., Miami Beach
- Miami Beach Police Department at 1100 Washington Ave., Miami Beach
- City of Doral Government Center at 8401 NW 53 Ter., Doral
- City of Miami City Hall at 3500 Panamerican Dr., Miami
- Port of Miami
- Miami International Airport
On Monday, Sept. 19, the university will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first day of classes with a toast at 2 p.m. on the steps of Primera Casa, where it all began.
