Outdoor fun family events fill calendar this time of year
Turning up the heat at Rotary’s Chili Cook Off for Miami Christian School are Cathie Burns and the Rotary’s current President Susan Fornaris.

The beautiful weather this time of year makes it especially busy for those wanting to do it all. From outdoor events such as the Coral Gables Rotary Chili Cook Off on Feb. 24, from 1 to 5 p.m., at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park (just south of Miracle Mile in Coral Gables), to the many activities Doral has in store for residents.

By the way, local Doral businesses and organizations are invited to participate in the Gables Rotary’s Chili Cook Off and compete for cash prizes. Registration to compete is only $25 and proceeds from the event benefit numerous charitable programs supported by the Rotary Foundation of Coral Gables. Visit www.chilchillin.com for more information.

Speaking of outdoors activities, on March 9, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Amelia Earhart Park (401 E 65th St , Hialeah, FL, FL 33013), we’re all looking forward to the 6th annual “A Safe Haven for Newborns Walk.” Grand Marshal leading off the Walk will be Miami Heat’s Vice President/Executive Director of the Miami Heat Charitable Fund Steve Stowe.

Since the Heat Charitable Foundation was created, Stowe’s efforts on behalf of the Heat organization have helped raise more than $20 million for local nonprofits. Of course the heart and soul of Safe Haven is its founder Nick Silverio. Among the organization’s amazing group of volunteers is Norris Perez who seems to work on every committee and has chaired the walk year after year.

Those interested in supporting this effort may join as a team captain, member, or as an individual – and every penny you raise helps ASHFN save babies from abandonment and potential death. Nick and Norris promise a fun day with food, music, and entertainment for the entire family. For more information, visit www.ASafeHavenforNewborns.com or reach out via email at norris.perez@halo.com.

Yet another walk for a great cause will be held Feb. 16 at 9 a.m., to benefit the Scleroderma Foundation. Hundreds will gather at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek to support the 15th annual “Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Walk/Run.”

This is a disease that has no known cause or cure and can affect any organ, with one of the most visible signs apparent when it affects the skin. The Scleroderma Foundation looks to raise money to educate and fund research.

For more information visit scleroderma.org. To register, visit www.scleroderma.org/steppingoutsoutheastflorida. Sponsorships are available starting at $250 to $5,000.

By the way, young people wanting to get involved in the Boy Scouts are invited to John I. Smith Elementary where they meet every Tuesday 7 p.m. For information, send an email to cubscouts552@gmail.com. For girls wishing to join the Girl Scouts send an email to doraltroop552@gmail.com. They also meet at John I Smith, Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.

Until next time, keep making each day count.
