The founders of two amazing non-profits inspire, give direction and even save lives of those in need. The Founder and CEOs of A Safe Haven for Newborns, Nick Silverio, and the Founder and President of The Home Team, Alex Pou, shared a joint passion for their charitable efforts on recent interviews with this writer on Gloria’s Gab LIVE, a video podcast on our CN website, cnews.net. For readers unfamiliar with A Safe Haven for Newborns, you have probably seen their signs at fire stations and hospitals and, no doubt, know about the Safe Haven Law allowing birth mothers a place to safely leave their babies within 72 hours of birth with no questions asked. Thus far more than 407 babies have been saved from abandonment and possible death, and countless mothers given aid when most needed.
Save the date, October 19, for the organization’s annual gala. For information, go to www.asafehavenfornewborns.com.
In turn, The Home Team, another impressive non-profit, takes on a mission of measurably improving the lives of Miami-Dade public school students through engagement with academic, sports and business leaders. Among the amazing efforts are The Home Team’s after school programs that pick children up from schools and take them to the youth center in South Miami where they are immersed in activities from tutoring, STEM, anti-bullying, arts, dance, and so much more. The Home Team also works with Flipany to provide every child with a meal.

On the service club front, Coral Gables Rotarians celebrated 5th Friday on August 30 at Kerdyk Real Estate. Former Coral Gables Vice Mayor and Rotarian, Bill Kerdyk, with Kerdyk associate and new Rotarian, Sue Padalino, welcomed the crowd who came out that rainy evening to enjoy the social and catch up on summer travel experiences. Rotary has two events coming up to help fund the club’s outreach efforts. On Sunday November 10, they are planning an affair at the Coral Gables Art Cinema that will include live music, open bar, lite theatre bites and an award-winning film, “Searching for Home Coming Back from War.”
The event at $100 per person will benefit the club’s monthly bingo games for the Veterans at the VA Hospital. The second fundraiser will be a concert at Steinway Piano Gallery featuring acclaimed international Italian pianist and Rotarian, Francesco Attesti. Proceeds from that event, also at $100 per person, will benefit the club’s international projects. For more information and either of these events, contact rotarycoralgables@gmail.com.monthly.
