Back-to-school drives and women’s clubs keep community spirit strong

School is back in session across South Florida, and thanks to the generosity of countless charities, churches, service organizations and volunteers, many families in need received the school supplies and backpacks necessary to help their children start the year on the right foot.
At the end of July, 4KIDS, a faith-based ministry serving children in foster care, joined Christ Fellowship for a major back-to-school outreach event. Similar drives were held throughout the community by numerous nonprofit organizations, all sharing the same goal—making sure every child begins the school year prepared for success. Kudos to everyone who helped make a difference.
Speaking of community outreach, South Florida’s women’s clubs have been busier than ever this summer. The Coral Gables Woman’s Club has found Birdie Bistro to be the perfect setting for several successful mini-fundraisers, including its popular monthly Gringo Bingo and its newest hit event where guests gather to learn and play Mahjong.
Fundraising Co-Chairs Carmen Suarez and Rita Tennyson deserve special recognition for their creativity and enthusiasm in developing new ways to support the club’s free Children’s Dental Clinic and numerous charitable projects. Following successful July events, Gringo Bingo returns on August 11, followed by Mahjong on August 12.

The Coral Gables club’s sister organization, the GFWC Doral West Dade Woman’s Club, is also making a difference while having fun. On August 22, the club will host a luxury party-bus excursion and VIP after-hours event at South Florida PBS headquarters in Boynton Beach. Guests will experience two spectacular virtual reality adventures—Colosseum: The Legendary Arena and Napoleon: The Immersive Saga—while enjoying food, beverages, games, prizes, and fellowship. The Coconut Grove Negro Woman’s Club continued its tradition of giving back by hosting its annual Signature Brunch on July 25 at the Coconut Grove Woman’s Club. Proceeds from the event support scholarships and a variety of community outreach programs that have benefited local students and families for generations.
Meanwhile, the Coconut Grove Woman’s Club continues to thrive under the leadership of President Iline Davila. Between bingo nights, community events, and service projects, the club has grown to nearly 200 members—an impressive milestone that reflects the strength of volunteerism and friendship in our community.
As always, it’s inspiring to see so many organizations working together to strengthen South Florida, one project, one fundraiser, and one act of kindness at a time. After all, communities don’t become stronger by chance—they become stronger because people choose to get involved.
