Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s (CGWC) last meeting of the club year took place on June 4 with great food, drinks and a lovely rededication ceremony officiated by GFWC FL finance director and former District 11 chair Elizabeth Fisher. The current District 11 director and past president of the club, Dr. Ruth Martinez, coordinated a memorable night for all.
After enjoying some food and drinks, there was a beautiful ceremony and a short speech by president Arely Ruiz, after which several awards were presented to outstanding members. Two of the most prestigious and oldest awards, the Barbara Lapsley New Member Award that was presented to Lydia Sanchez-Garrett, and the Gloria Burns Leadership Award was presented to Iris Segui.
In addition, the Ruiz also recognized three members who have also demonstrated outstanding leadership and creativity with the Pink Diamond Award. They are Media chair Luisaura Alvarez; Arts & Culture chair Alex Gullen, and Environment chair Jackie de Francisco.
Thanks to these women and the entire membership, this club operates three businesses: clubhouse rentals to maintain the historic building and help support the free clinic; owning and operating its free children’s dental clinic, and the running the GFWC club business itself.
Speaking of the free children’s dental clinic, several members of the club are helping raise money for the clinic by taking a fundraising cruise on June 28. This weeklong cruise makes a stop in Roatan, Honduras, where members will perform a day of service delivering school supplies to an elementary school in need.
Roatan is the hometown of club member Rita Tennyson who hosted a Sunday brunch for volunteers at her Birdie Bistro restaurant where they filled backpacks with supplies for Roatan students. Among the volunteers were Vivian Garcia, Dr. Iris Torres, Ruth Martinez, Rita Tennyson, Barbara Lapsley and Martha Black. Those interested in learning more about this dynamic group and possibly joining, can visit www.gfwccoralgablesowmansclub.org.
While club meetings are on hold until September, this dynamic group of women not only have that cruise on June 28, on the MSC World America, but have other events this summer as well.
Most recently, they held the first in a series of events coordinated by Alex Guillen. On June 12, Alex arranged the first in a series of arts programs that also will serve as mini fundraisers. This first program, called Women in Music, featured the music of three female composers. As guests enjoyed wine and cheese, the composers’ music was performed by local musicians. Alex, a great physical therapist in real life, is a woman of many talents. In fact, Alex served as deejay for the June 18 Gringo Bingo with a packed house at Birdie Bistro, complementing Vivo’s Steven Bradley as emcee.
With a portion of the proceeds directed to the Out of Foster Foundation, OOFF’s founder Rudy Bustamente was in hand with supporters with ongoing event sponsors Lynn Bauer, Dr. Hal Wanless, Jerry Kavulich, Carlos and Mayra Rossi, Tom and Kim Davison and Dr. Jose Chaviano.
Aside from Gringo Bingo on June 18, earlier that day the Greater Miami Festivals and Events Association (GMFEA) held its annual conference at the beautiful Milander Center for Arts and Entertainment in Hialeah. Look for more on this at GMFEA.org.
