Generous donors help ready students for classes

Schools are back in session and, thanks to many generous organizations and individual donors, children in need go back to class with new backpacks and school. Collections and distribution events were held throughout the county to help the underserved prepare for the new school year. The Back-to-School Health Fair gathered sponsors and donors at Charles Hadley Park on Saturday, July 29, for an incredibly large event that provided children with immunizations, health checkups, educational material and more. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables was on hand with a dozen or so volunteers to give away 312 back packs loaded with supplies and assist with other services provided by Angie Dawkins Organization. Among the many with this writer who enjoyed watching the grateful faces of the kids that day were Frank Sexton, Dr. Phil Boswell, Bruce Kerestes, Greg Martini, Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Dipak Joshi, Hadley Williams, Jennifer Kila, Yasi Orozco, Bill Quesenberry and fiancée Chie-Kyoung Hoban.

Doral resident Jeneissy Azcuy, who is a Gables Rotarian and Sr. Vice President of Marketing & Communications for South Florida PBS, was also at the Heath Fair with her S. FL. PBS cohorts Anabel Cardenas and Victoria Gallo to hand out resource materials. As a special treat, they brought along one of their Kids Vision characters, Xavier Riddle, as well as Miss Penny to the delight of the little ones who love her shows.

In other school related news, our own JC Bermudez Senior High School’s has a new school within a school, The Veterinary Academy. This new four-year program is intended to prepare high school students for a career in veterinary science. After graduating, students can take the veterinary assistant certification exam. With a passing score on that exam and 500 hours of clinic time, they will be certified veterinary assistants thus enabling them to go directly into the workforce or enter a post-secondary program. For information on this program, visit https://jcbdoralthunder.com/veterinary-academy/

Healthy smiles are also in demand for many children and the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club has been providing free dental care for disadvantaged children throughout Miami Dade County since 1939. For this dynamic group, celebrating their centennial year, their dental clinic is just one of many ways they provide a positive impact to our community. The club’s monthly Gringo Bingo, hosted by Doral resident, Clutch Burger owner Steven Bradley, is one way they can provide outreach to multiple charities and programs throughout the year.

Most recently proceeds from the club’s August 15th Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger in Coral Gables were directed to Tucker Elementary and the Dr Marvin Dunn Academy Community Education (ACE Academy). A group of generous sponsors who insured a successful event that night included Lynn Bauer, Hal Wanless, Mayra Rossi and Dr. Jose Chaviano, Jerry Kavulich, EZ Title Services (Liz Gamez Vazquez), and 1st Empire Elite Financial Frank Vazquez. Next up, proceeds from the September 12 Gringo Bingo will be shared with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. To reserve your spot, email gloria@cnews.net.

Finally, with the start of classes we should all remember that our Miami Dade County Public Library System (MDCPLS) offers invaluable resources for young and old alike. As students begin the new school year, your library offers everything from tutoring programs, a mobile device lending program, classes in multiple languages, digital online content, free home delivery service, passport services and so much more.
