The Great Miami Festivals & Events Association’s (GMFEA) Annual Conference is set for June 8, at the Hyatt Regency Miami.
This year’s theme, “Decadence, 10 years of taking events to the next level,” promises to be an event for anyone in the events planning, visitor and hospitality industries and always is spectacular conference.
Executive director Amanda MacMaster, who took over the position in 2022, has an impressive background in marketing, events management, and had served over the years as GMFEA president, vice president and treasurer, and is involved in numerous community organizations.
Amanda, with longtime conference coordinator Debbie Magenheimer and committee, always make magic for this non-profit that is comprised of those involved in producing a broad range of community celebrations including major arts, film, literary and culinary events, parades, street festivals, fairs, youth sporting competitions, and historic, environmental, national and ethnic awareness events. In addition, members also include vendors, entertainers, media and more.
At this year’s conference look for everything from great industry speakers and a chance to meet exhibitors to a festive lunch that includes a great floor show, industry awards and a new centerpiece competition.

The UM Sports Hall of Fame & Museum recently announced its new officers for the 2023-24 year: president, Coach Mike Ward; president-elect, Mark Drobiarz; vice president, Judy Pantoja-McCabe; treasurer, Mead McCabe; secretary, Maureen Piero, and past president, Mead McCabe. Congratulations to all these dedicated Canes.
Be sure to save the date, Oct. 19, for the 31st annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament to be played at The Biltmore Golf Course. For more info, visit www.CanesGolf.com. As for the annual Hall of Fame Fishing Tournament, it has been postponed until next year, June 2024, and will take place in The Keys. More info on that is at CanesFish.com.
Speaking of postponements, Lexi Barna’s family had scheduled her Bat Mitzvah party three years ago but COVID canceled that – so, May 13, 2023, was a reset to celebrate with her Sweet Sixteen. It was a fantastic party to beat all parties at the UM Newman Alumni Center. This all-white party with a Las Vegas theme had lots of games, photos opts, prizes and non-stop dancing for all to enjoy with family and friends. Truly, one of the best parties this writer has attended in a very long time.
A proud mother, Aliza Stern, and grandpa, Rudy Stern, were there with her brother, Ryan, aunts and uncles and extended family as well as her school and dance friends all of whom danced the night away. Congratulations, Lexi.
Earlier that same day, an over-the-top Centennial Mother’s Day Tea Party was celebrated by the Coral Gables Woman’s Club to support its free children’s dental clinic housed in the club’s historic building. With a “Bridgerton” theme, the wait staff and most all of the more than 170 guests dressed the part. Long empire waist gowns and the appropriate head pieces and tiaras were a sight to behold as were the decorations.
Guests arrived at noon with an hour or so to sip Prosecco and shop from some great vendors like Lele Reis Chrystal Jewelry, Bella Paz Originals, Athena Styles, Fred Astaire, Roxana Lynch Headpieces and Fair Trade MarketPlace in one of the club’s two beautiful ballrooms while enjoying the music of a trio from the Frost School of Music.
