Local clubs, non-profits, companies and individuals have been reaching out to those recently impacted by Hurricane Idalia. Immediately after Idalia hit, Rotary District 6990 Gov. Barbara Gobbi contacted local Rotarians asking them to access its centralized website they were hurriedly setting up at https://rotaryfl.org/rotary-florida-disaster-relief/. That site is where individuals and companies can sign up to volunteer and/or donate directly to districts devastated by the hurricane as well as a way for those districts in need, to request assistance.
Gobbi has been receiving daily briefings with all of the governors throughout Florida and understands the recovery process will be extensive and will require collective efforts on the part of the 50 plus clubs in her district that includes has approximately 2,000 Rotarians from three Florida counties and Grand Bahama Island in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
Gobbi advised they have established a partnership with Disaster Aid USA, a Rotary-approved organization positioning six disaster response trailers throughout the west coast and panhandle of Florida. These trailers were equipped and are clearing debris, mucking and gutting homes, tarping homes, and more.
They continue to need volunteers to assist with cleanup efforts, offer meals to volunteers, and provide other essential services. In other news, Dr. Beatriz Gonzalez, president MDC Wolfson Campus, recently joined us on Gloria’s Gab LIVE show to give an update on MDC and share information on partnerships and programs. Now in her fifth year and under her watch, Dr. Gonzalez has spearheaded the effort to promote the college’s short-term certificates program to upskill our workforce.
The New Student Center (NSC) team works on developing community partnerships to make these free programs available to residents.
In fact, the NSC team has been working with Lotus House since October 2022 and has enrolled 19 women in certificate programs thus far. Partnering with Mami-Dade County’s Human Resources Department, county job descriptions have been reclassified to align with MDC’s certificate and AA programs. MDC truly has been remarkable in this effort to upskill our workforce. For more information, visit https://www.mdc.edu/skillup/.
In other service club news, as the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club is celebrating its centennial, membership chair Kim Davison recently announced the club has grown to 90 members with additional prospective members in the pipeline. To get to know everyone, the club had a “Good Vibes” mixer for new, prospective, and old members on Aug. 30.
The dynamic group of women are non-stop in their efforts to make a positive impact and held their first meeting of the club year on Sept. 6. On Sept. 11, CGWC fundraising chair Rita Tennyson organized yet another event to commemorate 9/11 at DocB’s on Miracle Mile to to benefit Coral Gables Fire and Police. More on that in the next issue.
