From Thanksgiving Day through January South Florida will be abuzz with events that warm the heart and feed the soul. Kudos to all those volunteers who are giving their time, talent and treasure to make the holidays special for children of all ages.
Rotarians are serving meals at locations such as the Miami Rescue Mission and Chapman Partnership, while General Federation of Women’s Clubs members are all over delivering food baskets, supporting food pantries and even participating in numerous charity walks and festivals of which there are many.
Members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) and many Rotarians participated in the Alzheimer’s Walk held Nov. 17. Coral Gables Woman’s Cub (CGWC) also is supporting my favorite walk, the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bells Run at Tropical Park on Dec. 14, at 9 a.m.
CGWC member Jessie Francisco and others are walking to memory of Jessie’s mom, Mireya Kilmon, who was a past president of the club and suffered with the disease from an early age. This is such fun walk with a perfect jolly Santa on hand and everyone dressed in holiday attire that always prompts many laughs. For information on the event, contact Jordan Reardon at jreardon@arthritis.org or 561-486-1340.
Also coming up, The Villagers 39th annual Home Tour is set for Saturday, Dec. 7, and will feature historic homes in Shenandoah. The Villager’s president, Kelley Schild, was a recent guest on my Gloria’s Gab LIVE podcast and spoke about the upcoming fundraiser that helps support the preservation and awareness of our community’s historic sites.
Touring these homes every year is always a walk back in time and such fun. To view the podcast with Kelley, visit cnews.net and click on podcast/hosts and then click on Gloria. For more information visit www.thevillagersinc.org.
The 76th Junior Orange Bowl Holiday Parade is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 15. Tickets for the grandstands are on sale at the Junior Orange Bowl’s Eventbrite page but anyone can watch the parade for free by lining the streets in Downtown Coral Gables along Miracle Mile.
While the parade is one of the signature events, the parade is only one of numerous Junior Orange Bowl events taking place in the next few months. While cross country just concluded with a thousand runners, coming up next is basketball, tennis and golf with dates for the disability games and creative writing and more to be announced soon.
To thank city workers from police and fire to public works, the Jr. OB sponsored a breakfast at the police station for them all with Jr. OB members serving. UM’s new women’s basketball coach, Tricia Cullop, was on hand at the event with free basketball for everyone.
Junior Orange Bowl president Michael Green, who was a guest on Gloria’s Gab LIVE on Nov. 12, noted that this appreciation breakfast will become an annual event going forward. In other news, South Miami resident Sabrata Basu is an architect and urban planner whose artistic talents soon will be on display. During the month of December, Basu’s paintings and photographs will be exhibited at the Wirtz Gallery, United Community Bank (Formerly First National Bank of South Miami) for all to enjoy. In addition to being a former city planner for the City of South Miami, Basu also is passionate about giving back as evidenced in his work as a Peace Corps volunteer and in his service work with the Rotary Club of South Miami where he served as president 2016-17. Basu is just one of many unsung heroes in our community that it is a pleasure to recognize from time to time.
Veteran’s Day was celebrated all over the county in many ways and Coral Gables Rotarians chose to honor the weekend with a movie event at Coral Gables Art Cinema to support the club’s monthly bingo games for the veterans at the VA Hospital. The event was coordinated by RCCG secretary and past resident Sally Baumgartner Goodman.
Bacardi supplied an open bar for a reception prior to the award winning documentary about soldiers coming home. Among the many supporting the event included former Coral Gables mayor and RCCG past president Don Slesnick, with other RCCG past presidents, Greg Martini, Felix Pardo, and Ana Fournaris Gallagher, as well as the club’s president-elect Greg Patrino. Others attending included Tom Gallagher, Larry Goodman, Phil Boswell, Suri Pascual and Robert Bedell.
Finally, South Florida PBS has brought an event from Amsterdam to South Florida and it is one you will not want to miss. From now through April you can step into the visionary world of Leonardo Da Vinci with an immersive art experience. The groundbreaking technology for this experience was transported directly from Amsterdam where Jenny Azcuy, SFPBS’s vice president of Communications and Marketing traveled to coordinate the planning. The stage for this immersive experience is in Boynton Beach where South Florida PBS is headquartered and brings alive DaVinci’s genius in art, science, mathematics and engineering. Sponsorships are available to transport school students to participate.
In just a short time since it opened, thousands already have visited the experience. As of opening night, more than 10 schools had signed up with transportation underwritten even before the event opened. To learn more, check out my Nov. 5 interview with Jenny Azcuy on Gloria’s Gab LIVE on Facebook, YouTube or at www.cnews.net under podcasts. For more information or tickets for the experience, visit www.PBSDaVinci.org.
Until next time, share your time and talents, count your blessings, and make a difference.
