Six hundred plus parents and star students representing more than 50 Independent Schools in South Florida (ISSF) gathered at the Miami Airport Convention Center on April 9, for the 33rd Annual “Star Awards” Luncheon recognizing top all around student chosen by the schools. ISSF President, Cheryl Rogers, with ISSF Executive Director, Dr. Teri Logan, welcomed the guests and thanked sponsors, in particular, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club for their support for ISSF’s annual spelling and geography bees. Among the Pinecrest area schools with their star student included Riviera Day & Preparatory School- Alexander Goncherov, Emma Lopez, Rafael Moro, Sydney Zanca; Palmetto Bay Academy- Juliana Addison, Luca Miklo, Victoria Pinheiro; Gulliver Prep- Thaddeus Slamker, Zakary Latham, Olivia Gabay, Alejandro Cuono, Margarita Velez; St Louis Covenant School – Noah Gestodo, Luciana Planas, Lucas Torres; and Temple Beth Am -Rambam Day School- Avery Kaplan, Ellie Goldstein; Ayla Fisch.
The Two Hundred Club of Greater Miami held its semi-annual dinner at the Riviera Country Club on April 15. The evening featured as its guest speaker Miami Dade County Police Department’s new sheriff and first female to hold that position, Rosie Cordero-Stutz. After Rosie’s talk she fielded questions for a very appreciative audience whose support has helped so many families who died in the line of duty. Since its inception in 1968, the Club has distributed in excess of $1 million to families of fallen police officers and firefighters. This club does not seek public funds but relies on its club investments, dues, donations and bequests. Among the record crowd attending the affair with this writer were 200 Club President Ann Pierce Stith; Bill Bermont; Trish and Dan Bell; Ed and Carol Williamson; James and Lorena Hartenstein; Jon and Anne Goldman; Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless; Kadie Black; Mary Snow, Eddie Snow; Dr. Paul George; Robin and Susan Shelley; Dr. Richard Souviron; Jim Skinner; Karen and Richard Hauser; Charlette Seidel; Chief Edward James Hudak, Jr.; Bruce Bounds; and Phil Lyons.
In other non-profit news, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as its guest speaker, Comic Kids’ co-founder and fine art dealer, Kat Barrow-Horth. Kat shared how she and her husband, Reed, wanted to use their talents and passion for art by providing vulnerable youth with access to art and teaching them how to draw comic, cartoon, and book characters, something they relate to and enjoy. The couple works with children in pediatric hospitals, foster care, homeless shelters and those suffering from abuse and neglect, providing them with art classes, art supplies, art books, and providing their educators with additional art resources. The work has not gone unnoticed. In fact, you may have seen these two amazing people as guests on the Kelly Clarkson Show where they spoke about the non-profit’s start and mission. In other news, collaborations have proven to be effective ways for organizations to make valuable connections and strengthen their outreach. On April 8, Fogo de Chao hosted a joint mixer of 2 chambers of commerce, the South Dade Chamber and the Greater Kendall Business Association, as well as one of the oldest business networking groups in South Florida, Profit Inc. It was an electrifying night and hats off to South Dade Chamber Rick Alberti and Profit Inc. and GKBA’s president Carlos Ribero for giving such value to their membership. Among the guests were Don and Maria Van Orsdel, Rick Niedorf, Dr. Joyce Gomes Osman, Lillian Ser. The very next day, these groups met at Community Newspapers South Miami Office for another mixer sponsored by Dade Federal Credit Union.
Speaking of Profit Inc., the group changed things up this month holding their third Thursday lunch at Mojitos on SW 8 Street. Profit Inc. was founded well before any BNI groups. Profit is unique as a category exclusive organization as it does not require members to give or refer business but somehow it works better because it happens organically. Our area women’s clubs are packing the spring calendar with a variety of interesting and fun events. Coral Gables Woman’s Club has a monthly Art Club night making everything for painted wine glasses to holiday decorations. CGWC’s Art Chair Alex Guillen, gathered the group on April 16, to make Easter wind chimes or, in this writer’s case , a mobile. Coming up next, CGWC has its Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday May 10. This is a great way to celebrate moms, daughters and best friends and, best of all, the proceeds help the club provide free dental services for 500 children of the working poor every year at its Children Dental Clinic.
