The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC) led by president and CEO Lily Lopez recently held its 2022 Health & Wellness Champion Awards Luncheon and Expo at The Biltmore Hotel.
Among those receiving awards that day was Carlos Martinez, president and CEO of United HomeCare, a non-profit organization serving South Florida’s older disabled adults and family caregivers since 1973. Carlos was presented with SFLHCC’s Healthcare Champion Community Engagement Award, a recognition that is certainly well deserved for this community leader who has done so much for seniors.
He was especially happy to be recognized with his longtime friend and colleague, Josefina Carbonell. Of course, humble person that he is, Carlos accepted the award not for himself alone but for, in his words, “his United HomeCare family and all healthcare heroes.”
On the service club scene, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Florida District 11 director Virginia Yermoli recently invited the presidents from the 12 clubs in South Florida for a get-together to discuss possible collaborations and to get to know each other.
In addition, this busy director is sending out newsletter updates and attending many events, most recently enjoying an evening at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s President’s reception/dinner party held at the clubhouse on June 25 honoring its president, Ruth Martinez, who is taking on a second two-year term.
By the way, that party was one of the best ever, as guests, dressed in their favorite ’60s outfits, occupied the dance floor for most of the evening with DJ Germain’s music beckoning them to get up and dance. Adding to the amazing night was catering by Rita Tennyson (R Catering) who always goes the extra mile including making strawberry margaritas with flowers and all.
Among the many enjoying the night were Iris and Ralph Rivera; President Ruth and husband Sam Martinez; Carmen Suarez; Maribel Trujillo-Fruitstone; Lavette Moore; Kim Davison; Theresa Gilmore; Carol Horkowitz; Kristina and Muzzie Jackson; Linda Hartwell; Barbara Lapsley, and many more.
In other news, July 4 celebrations were many throughout South Florida. Gables Rotarians gathered at Matheson Hammock Park for their annual July 4th picnic during the day before fireworks around the county that night. While many grilled hamburgers and hot dogs at home that day, Rotarians got chicken and ribs coordinated by the club’s past president Sally Baumgartner.
That same week, Ana Fournaris and her new board were installed on July 7 at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. More on that next time.
Also coming up soon, GableStage and Abre Camino Collective will present the World Premiere of Rubenology, The Making of an American Legend. This is a heart-warming comedy starring Cuban-American actor Ruben Rabasa, whom Andy Garcia calls “La Gloria de Cuba.” A man who has been a fixture on Spanish television in Miami, Ruben is currently starring in the Father of the Bride reboot alongside Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, and Adria Arjona. This should be a fun show for all. The show runs July 14-31 at GablesStage at The Biltmore Hotel. To purchase tickets, visit gablestage.org.
Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
